I just have to tell someone this story
I have been working on setting up an Oceanic 144 half circle for almost three years. I am to the point of adding live stock and all is going well.
I have a 2016 apex with I think all the modules monitoring and controlling most everything. I installed four leak detection sensors, hi low sensors on sump, variable speed dual return pumps, etc etc. I have everything alarmed and that has saved me a couple of times. I thought I was ready for all contingencies. Here is my story:
Last night at 3 am I heard a crash that was loud enough to wake me up. First thought was tank burst; nope not tank. All looks good there, grab flashlight and start looking for burglar, broken windows, opened doors, nope all secure. I go out front looking for car wreck or any other indication of where the bang came from. Nothing. At 3 am my next step was back to bed.
At 5:30 I have a water sensor alarm going off, sending me texts, beeping at the tank. I jump out of bed and find my clarisea sk5000 dumping water from its overflow pouring into the sump BUT about half of the overflow is reaching the side of the sump and is going over the side into the bottom of the stand and rolling across the wood floor to a very large and deep puddle.
I quickly turned off return pumps which then set off the sump high water alarm and then started getting those texts and alarms everywhere. Stopped it all, cleaned it up, realized the wife slept through it all and just sat there dumbfounded; what the heck happened?
The reason is why I am writing this; The loud noise I heard at 3 am was an mp40 cable tie letting loose from the glass and the mp40 hitting the ground loudly. On its way to the ground it hit the power supply wall wart for the clarisea sk5000 rolling filter and popped it out of the wall. No big deal but that set off a chain reaction. The clarisea continued to filter away and got to the point that it should have rolled the filter paper a bit to lower the water level but without power it couldn't and that caused the overflow that ultimately caused the flood. Wow, Rube Goldberg (look him up if you don't recognize his name) couldn't have designed a better way to flood my family room
I am writing this because somebody might learn something from it. For me, I will be changing a couple of things with the position of my clarisea (my Fault not there's) and adding more leak detection. Final change will be adding code to my return pumps to turn off if the apex senses water where it shouldn't be.
Who would have ever thought that the failure of a cable tie protecting an mp40 would have caused a flood?
Anybody else have any weird "fails" they want to share?
