Hey guys when i dive in certain reef parts am i allowed to get my own coral like frag off a mother colony because i would be able to get a little put them in my tank then grow them out

I would google the laws and look at reputable sights for locations you plan to dive. I am sure it would be illegal for you to harvest coral without jumping through some hoops.

Okay well what about just spreading coral out. Like frag a little off mother colony then then plant where it needs to be

I live in northern florida and i know florida all together has all sorts of laws governing what you can harvest, how much at a time, and certain species that are banned all together from harvesting. Call your local conservation office, they will have answers for you. And usually destroying (in your case fragging) any coral, whether you are harvesting or not I would assume is not legal unless you have permits to do so (i.e. coral restoration).

All depends on where your diving, what you plan to collect, ...those types of things, calling a conservation office in the area your trying to collect is your best option.

The reefs are protected in the USA. Some things can be collected in Florida but you must have a license to do so. Getting a licenses is a lengthy process though the state of Florida. Otherwise all you can do is look, not even allowed to touch.

Getting a fishing license in florida is not really that hard. Just pay for it, and if you look it says that ALL stony coral harvesting is prohibited.

You would have to check your local laws, but its probably restricted. You may be able to get a permit. Doesn't sound like you do much diving as it is. Most of the time, cost of the fines are way more than buying from a lfs. Good luck.
