People (usually sellers) frequently refer to large fish as being "show size". What the heck are they talking about? I've never heard of a dog show like event for fish. That would be hilarious!

I mean there are the trade shows and swaps. But generally “show size” is a fully grown or near fully grown adult fish, similar to what would be on display at a public aquarium.
I've always took it to mean sized to show off proudly in your aquarium. They do have fish shows but the only ones I have heard of is for flower horns. There are probably others.
Show size fish means that they are at or near full adult size with adult colors. It has nothing to do with a trade show.

The North Jersey Aquarium Society held a freshwater fish show every year. Aquarists place fish in different categories e.g. Discus, Tetras or Killies. Fish are judged by size and coloration with plaques given to category winners.
