Where did you get your SPS pest?

Over the past few months I have followed the new threads while acquiring SPS. It seems like there are a lot of people that have had red bugs, nudis and everything else under the sun (or MH :tongue

Anyway, where are people getting them from? Local stores? friends? online?

Please let everyone know so we don't make the same mistake!

Mostly online from cultivated reef. I've never had a problem with the 14 pieces (Sps alone, lost count of acans and zoas) I've gotten from him.

Thank you! this is exactly the response I was looking for. I understand that it probably s** calling out places you have gotten coral from, but how else are they going to learn and fix it? This hobby is so expensive I cant imagine getting a pest from a stupid $20 frag that takes out everything in my tank.

I understand feeling the need to share this info with people. But here's the problem, first off reef2reef is not the place to flame stores, if you have a problem with a vendor let them know.

The second problem, is if you have pest in your tank from coral purchases its your fault. Rather than blame the vendor, it would be wise to reevaluate your reef keeping practices. Dipping is an essential, and not solely the vendors responsibility. I dip every time, even with frags from people's tanks I've seen and trust.

yeah let's keep this a friendly no flaming site, unlike a few other reef sites I know where all they do is flame away, R2R has always been special and different because people here are more level headed and aren't quick to point fingers.

pest on acros are inevitable unless YOU the hobbyist take the precautionary steps to prevent them from getting in your tank, you are just as much to blame if your corals get infected with a parasite if you don't dip and inspect your corals before something goes in your tank

Dips dont always work and there are some things that you just can't see/notice until much after a piece is acquired. I get your point, I dip myself, but to say the seller has no responsibility it just flat put rediculous.

Pets shouldn't be "inevitable". Maybe if known sellers were called out and had some accountability they wouldnt be.

Another, be it a small one, reason to dip every coral you take in. It is the best chance you are going to get to dip that coral and give it a good medical exam, and we all wish we could go on a dip / medical exam campaign from time to time. Any body can have pest in their tank. Reality is, when vendors have to deal with quantity in and out there is no way they can possibly have totally 100% clean product every time. The best I can expect of them is to do the best they can. I agree the final responsibility for our reef systems is our own responsibility. We must each do the best we can, and can expect challenges from time to time. It it was easy it wouldn't be so rewarding. We owe it to our vendors to let them know when we find pests in our dip water to give them positive feed back so they can work on the problem. If a vendor is negligent in responding they will soon be out of business.

I'm not saying that, I'm saying we can't put the sole responsibility on the seller. I absolutely think its 50/50. A reputable vendor won't stay reputable long sending out pest infested frags. It is still our responsibility to check them and dip them before putting them in our tanks. As for a place to flame, if you have feedback after an incident with a vendor use the feedback forum.

Totally agree with what everyone is saying. And I can see how my first post came off as blaming sellers for everything that goes wrong with a tank, haha. For me, I do take 90% of the responsibility of what goes into my tank, I dunno, maybe I got too scared about getting pets and needed some security

I agree with most said, You just gotta understand some vendors are gonna operate as chop shops and decide if your willing to take a litte extra precaution and risk when ordering from them. The truly aquacultured stuff is probably safer, not 100% but your gonna pay a little extra. I gotta be honest though, when I walk into a LFS and see them putting a new shipment away just cutting the bags and throwing corals in, I choose not to buy from them. I don't expect their systems to be completely safe but I do expect a little precaution on their part.
