Where do corals go when they die?

Some corals can die and then months to even a year later sprout new tissue. There are documented cases here in the forums. So I just toss any dead skeleton into the back area in low light....just in case.

If it is truly dead, I do try to get them to regrow as John3 stated, I will keep them to show all the kids in my outreach programs. Especially any large ones. I leave the algae on them, worms, everything and the kids get to see it all. Really cool for them. ( I dry them out, just not clean them.)

If it looks clean/bleached I throw it in the refugium under the macro algae for extra rubble. The nasty ones i throw in the trash.

Calcium for the tomato plants.

I melt mine in a propane-fired crucible at over 1,000*C. As the skeletons melt and bubble away, I perform a complex ceremonial dance with incantations, and pray to the heathen gods that they take the spirits of the dead corals from this world peacefully. I also beg the heathen gods for protection from RTN/STN for the rest of the SPS in my tank.

Nah just kidding, I clip them off their plugs or the rock and toss them in my sump.
