Dinos cover the sand when the lights are on and seem to disappear once the lights are off. Where do they go? Do they just lose their color or enter the water column or die or what?

I believe they hide in the water, from what I have read.

Dinos are protists, so they kind of have a mind of their own, figuratively speaking. Probably more like a "hive mind" similar to fungi.

They clump up during the light cycle and reduce clumping with no lights which means they’re in the water column. That’s why UV sterilizers in high flow areas work on the ones susceptible to UV.
