I have an AIO so I keep the probes in the back chamber. My InkBird has two temperature probes and I put one toward the bottom of each overflow chamber. The one thing I wanted to make sure of was that at no time the probes would ever be exposed to air since that would likely cause a serious malfunction with the heater.

I have mine in the overflow section that holds the return plumbing for the sump.
And the heater is in the sump. So I have mine in the "coldest" part of the tank to ensure the temp is always warm and not too cold.

If you put them in the chamber before the actual heaters, then you are measuring the temp at the end of the cycle. If you put them anywhere else, then you are measuring the temp at that part of the cycle.
I like the thinking on this method, I'll most likely go this route.
