Where Have The SPS Gone??

Honestly, I have been looking for some nice fuzzy sticks to fill in my mixed reef and have been really having a hard time finding a nice frag pack from a fellow enthusiast.. Seems a few years back I could check the for sale forums and the sps frag packs were very abundant. I can't believe how the tide has changed for the zoa's and the chalices, and zoa's for $25 and up per polyp for nice colors.... cmon now.

I have found a fellow enthusiast on here with sps for sale at very reasonable prices and plan to place an order with him very soon.

This hobby is all about SPS in my opinion. But, as a vendor sometimes its hard to sell. For this reason you will not see it offered as much. Nearly anyone in this hobby can care for and grow zoas, acans, chalice and so on but not everyone has good luck with SPS. With the right equipment and a little knowledge SPS will grow like a weed...

Its really strange, one week SPS is the most popular coral on the forums. Then the next week its no where to be found.

Looks like we will have to offer some SPS frag packs? We have SEVERAL nice colonies in the system.

So true!!Everything stated here from top to bottom....but I beleive with all the available equipment out there it is so much easier to keep sps now.Yes they are less hardy then lps but they are more maintainable then led on to beleive.

SPS is still a must have in my book and that was the reason I set up my reef tank in the first place...LOL.

yah..you dont want your tank to look flat !. there is no landscape without SPS .

Keeping an SPS tank is like flying an airplane , if you are not careful, you crash and everyone dies. :snicker:
Thats why all us SPS keepers are Daredevils and have a death wish. :hell_boy:

I have a 40gallon LPS tank plumbed in with my display so I can enjoy the chalices and favias etc, but my 300g is for my love of SPS. PM me if your looking for a great sps pack cheap. I have to make room and have lots of LE's to spare. Check it out

Thanks Richard. You have some very nice ones yourself. When I make some room I will have to hit you up for some......

thanks nick.. but with a thread title of "where have all the sps gone?" it looks like it ended up in both of our tanks. no regrets on this end. lol

Very nice Nick. I'm a SPS lover as well. I have been buying a good many LPS corals this past 6 mos micros, favia and acans. My tank use to be SPS dominated only. But now you can say it is a mixed tank. It's been hard to find many new nice looking acros these days. But I have seen some nice Aussie pieces coming in lately. And I got several of the nicest ones. Theres still some old school sps I'm looking for though. Hopefully the sps will be more in demand again.

Nice tank sps is hands down my favorite type of coral. A good sps tank like yours is truly a beautiful thing.

It will be back....all of these crazy chalices started coming in and that's what everyone started buying. It was the best way to make some money in the hobby. And they can be kept under basic lighting.

i think these two statements sum up the whole thing

sb - many people who haven't been around long enough to see trends come and go quickly find themselves in the the LPS game. they see color and potential for money to support the hobby and combine that with ease and less equipment and LPS seem like the way to go, and for many it is. and retail is sure to follow the market if they want to be in buisiness

what the heck - but then eventially they discover this. it is hard to build (not saying it can't be done of course) a natural looking display out of lps. you lose the vertical component and end up with a fruit stand or a tank full of frags all over the bottom. some like the look, but many will turn to sps to finish out a nice display

sps can be a pita but i enjoy the exercise in futility - without sps i would not enjoy this hobby nearly as much. my problem is choosing which to keep and which to cull when real estate is so limited and so many beautiful sps specimens are available for so cheap...
doubt that - just check LA's DD section or any of the sponsors here and you'll find 100's of aqua/mari/wild caught specimens to choose from. finding nice sps is not a problem at all

i like them all! muhahahh
someone has to save them BP and the chinese!

Cheers to that one, Richard!!! I pretty much have everything in my reef, and I can honestly say, IMO, most SPS are a PITA compared to most LPS. And now, with the myriad of GORGEOUS LPS available, I'm not surprised they are more popular. Let me tell you, 20 years ago, when the coolest LPS was a green Euphyllia and a brown tongue coral, sure acros came along and WOW!!! Now LPS give them a run for their money

Oh, and gratuitous MIXED reef shot
