Where is everyone getting glass from fo so cheap?

I'll bet the price quotes included polishing the edges. A pair of heavy gloves and a belt sander belt will take care of the sharp edges rapidly. The problem with buying glass at the lumber yards is that they don't normally carry 1/4" glass or acrylic. I use 1/4" acrylic for my baffles since it's thick enough to not bow under the water pressure. A good bead of silicon on each side will hold it in place for a long time.

It is probably the polished edges that are costing you. My glass place wanted $10/panel to polish the edges.

I am pretty sure that's why but don't really mind since it keeps me from cutting myself. I asked her if the price would be lower without the polishing and she said that they dont sell the glass without edge polishing. The online places added $10 each panel even if you only wanted one edge to be polished.

Glad to hear you were able to get a better deal. One thing I'm learning is no matter how much we DIY, it is a very expensive hobby. I found that spreading out over time helps, but my wife isn't too excited about aquarium supplies all over the place.

I hear that! I am going on 3 months of planning and building and still not close to getting water in it lol But then I go to my LFS and see the full complete ready to run system for $4000.00 without livestock and feel much better about my little frustrations.

I am having a hard time finding panels for a 40b sump project with the following cut list in 1/4" glass.

One panel 17 3/8" x 12"
One panel 17 3/8" x 11"
Two panels 17 3/8" x 10"

My local glass shop wants $35 each panel!! Ace hardware said they can get 1/4" glass and have not got back to me with a quote yet but I have a feeling it will also be a lot. I looked online at a couple other places and most of them are $20-30 per panel and then you have to pay shipping. Am I missing something? I see several people get all the pieces cut for $35-50 for all of them.

Little glass shop in Newark, DE charges me $15 per 1/4" panel. My sump panels cost me $60 for 4 panels, and just had my coast to coast overflow for $30.

Thats what I ended up paying for mine out of a glass shop in Laurel. Its a 20 minute drive from home but close to work :)

Best thing i found, local constructors that set hurricane windows, they always keep the old windows, you can pick them up for cheap, its ether you buy them of them or they sell them to recycle companies..
next time try a glass setter.. it might end up cheaper for you.

I could those cut for 40.00 to 50.00 total.....but we know the guy at the glass shop.

Ask for salvage glass, it's a lot cheaper and just as good. Ours always looked good clear glass...
