So as I am getting closer and closer to my tank and sump being delivered I am now having more questions. Where is everyone placing their surge protectors and what not? I was thinking of making a separate compartment in the stand for the electrical just for the sake of making things look better. The other option is just to screw it all on the back of the stand which doesnt look as good but will not get wet at all. I see a lot of stands that people are keeping all the electrical inside but what about the humitity inside the stand and what not?

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

Edit : Post up some pictures of the inside of your stand if you wouldnt mind!

I have one surge protector screwed to the inside of the back wall and the other surge protector is screwed to the outside of the back wall of my stand. My cabinet stand is mostly open in the back so I don't believe there is much humidity under the cabinet.
BTW I used to maintenance aquariums for a LFS and most had the surge protectors inside the cabinet.

I suppose I can just throw a couple of nice size vents on the back of the stand.

I was afraid of water splashing inside the stand so all mine are on the back of the stand. The Apex module and E8's are screwed to the stand. The Apex display, Tunzee ATO and Vortech drivers are attached to the back of the stand with velcro.

I made a dry side on the inside of my stand....
Everything is mounted on this board...there is pan liner on the other side and the space inbetween is siliconed to keep moisture out...

Alright, I think I am going to build the cubbyhole inside the stand a because who doesnt need a little extra storage inside the stand? So even if I dont use it I for electrical I can put something else there.

Here's mine when I was setting it up. It's a rats nest of wires right now though as I've changed out a few pieces of equipment but have't zip tied everything back up yet. I initially was going to put a wall between the sump and the electrical equipment but after getting the sump in just was not enough room. I left a opening in the back of the stand to allow for air circulation and have not had any issues with humidity.....yet.

The reactor next to the electrical is no longer there as I was worried if it ever leaked I would have problems and I needed the space for the rest of my electrical equipment:

I have temporarily mounted my electric on a piece of plywood prior to building a cabinet to hold it all. This will allow me to get a feel for how it's laid out....and I've already decided to tighten it up a bit.

Here you can see the plywood electric stuff....prior to building the side cabinet.

I am just building my first tank. I decided the easiest thing to do is use industrial Velcro. I can the just pull things off and quickly rearrange whenever I need to put something new in.

A lot of my electrical is mounted on the back of my canopy. There are also two DJ power-strips mounted on the back of the stand. There are no power-strips mounted inside of the stand.

Gfci protect. Surge protectors do not.

You are right about the protection. The problem with gfci's is that they can trip over the slightest stray current anywhere and then the tank is down, perhaps when you are on vacation! Once they do it once its more likely to happen repeatedly so then the gfci should be replaced. I always recommend running at least a power head from another circuit to keep a tank viable until its known that the circuit was tripped..

My outlets are about 12''-16'' from the sump. Its been like this for about 2 years with no problems and no salt build up. I built this with a gfci that protects all the other outlets then ran a plug from the gfci to the wall.

I need to find some good velcro, the stuff i have wears down very easily and it can't really be trusted for much

Going to try eletrical inside the stand and if I start to dislike it for some reason I will be moving it out on the back of the stand. I am going to cut out enough room in the back of the stand to put some nice size attic vents.

Thanks for all the replies and pictures.

I have dedicated GFCI for this set up. This is pic of under cabinet with right side door open and some equipment controls on door but most electrical on side wall of cabinet. Most is mounted with industrial strength Velcro - even power strips.
