Hi all,

I'm building my first mixed reef aquarium and am on the tail end of cycling, no livestock. I'm getting ready to stock the refugium with Chaeto.

Where is a good place to purchase chaeto?

And do I need to quarantine the chaeto somehow? I currently have not livestock in the tank.

Thanks for your help!

Would rather get it from a known good tank. No reefers in your area?

2 posts below yours there's a member that says he will have Free chaeto pretty soon. I'm not a fan of hitchhikers so I'd pull it apart somewhat and spread it across a plastic bag make sure no aiptasia or other unwanted pests are in it. Of theres no aiptasia in it I'd even let it sit a few minutes fully submerged in RODI

No problem, if it has aiptaisia I'd probably boil some water and poor it on a small amount outside to kill the aiptaisia, Ive never heard of anyone doing this so it would be an experiment and not sure if it would harm the chaeto. I will say that I have had aiptasia on chaeto and did a hypo salinity (don't remember but was very low) and did not kill the aiptasia.

Yes they were alive I had a broken bottle of Phyto from them and they replaced with no issues as well.

When you soaked it in RODI, was it the same temp as the tank?
