Where to buy clam is the question!

Pacific East Aquaculture. I had never ordered from the before last month and found them to be awesome. They even called the day after delivery to check to make sure everything went smoothly. +1 for sure.

Pacific East Aquaculture is the source. At least between the various forums I read almost daily there is one source they suggest to stay away from and one to purchase from. Pac East is always the go-to source for clams with the highest level of success. Check out their sub thread on this board. They will post some images on what is available from time to time as well as answer questions.
Please note that I have not personally purchased from them. I think that is important to say. However, I have been looking for a source for a while now and thus my comment about scouring the net across various forums for those with the most success. Every time it honestly points to this company. Once my tank is more mature then I will be paying them a visit online to purchase one or two. I have a 210 gallon that is a year old this week but I do not think it is ready yet for a clam so in a holding pattern

Ah yes I forgot that places actually have decent LFS! That would be nice...
I have 10 clams from PEA in my tank right now. Oldest group been doing well for 4 months now with new growth. No place is perfect and I did get two from them that I didn't think were in great shape that didn't last too long, but overall PEA is the best out there IME and I have bought clams from a lot of places...
My number 2 would be off liveaquaria's ORA section. NOT divers den, avoid them. Pretty amazing blue squammies that will not only die but kill all your other clams. The ones that ship from ORA in florida are in another section of the site.
I would recommend PEA too. Direct from ORA is good... hard to do since the place has to have a storefront and also an online presence... the ones that say that they ship from Florida on the LA website are from ORA, but I cannot support LA for clams anymore even if they do never touch their water. I only mention this since ORA does have black and gold clams and black and white clams some of the time.
If you want to buy a box and pay for air freight, you can probably get some from Biota or Tahiti. Probably be $2k+.

I know the LFS by me near Chicago has a great selection of clams for a good price, so there may be something near you. My LFS just labels their's as "Tahitian Maximas" and said they were wild caught, so I assume they are from PEA but haven't confirmed it. If I got one online it would certainly be from PEA.
Those likely come transshipped direct from Tahiti or they stop off at LA. Dr. Mac has not had wild Tahitian in a while and has kinda sworn them off in a few posts in this forum. If they have a bunch, then they might have purchased a box and had it transshipped. If they have a few, then they probably got them at SDC, or the like. If they are over 5", then they are wild.
They can have Perkinsus, a protozoan that can be hard on them and also harm other clams in the tank. The next time that I try a Tahitian, I am going to treat it with Metroniadazole 100mg/L twice a day for 10 days - this kills other single cell protozoans and was going to see if it would work on a Maxima clam. I have not tried this, but since I figure that 99% of all Tahitians die anyway, why not see if I can help find a way to give them a better chance in captivity.

Ah thanks. I've seen Dr. Mac's older videos I guess. Oops. Still his current stock is amazing looking.
He used to have a lot of them. He posted on here a time or two. I am paraphrasing, but one day, his supplier quit or otherwise was not in the game. He started to get them from a different source where they were shipped from the remote islands out of water, mostly for food. This shipment and storage out of water allows the clam to weaken and the protozoan to take over on down the line. With the increasing deaths, this is when he quit. You can probably search for this and include the word "perkinsus" and find it.

That's. While generally I prefer aquaculture, since my wife and I went to Tahiti on our honeymoon and saw them everywhere in the wild, the idea of one from there was tempting. I also liked the larger sizes of the wild ones. Well just confirms to me that PEA is the right place to go.
