Where to find barb x female thread reducer coupling

Hi ,

Long story short - am trying to connect my fluval SP6 which has an output of 1.25 inch Barb to my Lifereef Protein skimmer of 1 inch barb . I want to use 1.25 inch tubing for the flow but need a reducer coupling that is 1.25 inch barb x 1 inch female thread ...

What size Lifereef skimmer are you running, which injector (spa or Mazzei) and can you post a picture of the current barb fitting connection on up your skimmer? I’m curious as I’ve only seen Lifereefs with 3/4” barb fittings for the skimmer to pump hose connection, though I’ve only have experience with the 30” and under skimmers. Also, isn’t the barb fitting on the SP6 a 1-1/4 to 1” step down barb?

Well both of these work if you have only one size . Mine is one end of 1.25 inch and other end of 1 inch

SVS-30 with mazzei Venturi . I was using a SP4 but am reusing that in my frag tank and have a SP6 lying around which I can use for the skimmer .

That coupling will work though ! Thank you !!

Read my post edit regarding barb sizes... so I think you’d actually need a 1” to 3/4” reducing barb.

@Water Dog - so the connection on my lifereef is 1 inch as that’s what I had asked Jeff to make .
Now you are right about the step down barb fitting on SP6 .

However , I think the 1 inch portion of the step down barb is too less and hence with the pressure of the pump , the hose keeps coming off as it’s not a tight fit even with the clamps on .

Try soaking the end of the tube in hot boiling water for 30 seconds to see if you can force the hose around the 1-1/4” portion of the barb for a tighter, more secure fit, though I will contend that it might work better with non braided 1” vinyl hose.

The silicone works and goes over the 1.25 inch but it’s not by much and still the pressure is enough to come off

If you’re running an in sump and not external set up, try this, though you will need thread paste for the pump thread to female coupling fitting as they are different thread types (GAS vs NPT).

Use the 1-1/4” female coupler on the 1-1/4” pump threads.

I do think that part of the issue you’re having is the amount of pressure you‘re putting on the stock hose connection set up. An SP6 is a lot of pump for the 30” Lifereef. With the more secure hose attachment mod suggested above I do think it would be a good idea to add an inline valve to be able to valve back the pump a bit if it is in fact, too much flow for your 30” Lifereef.

depends on how hot it will get. try it if it works great.
