Hey guys, I'm new to the saltwater side of the hobby and am planning to set up a FOWLR tank and eventually transition it to a reef tank once I get the hang of things. So my question is where can I get live rock that doesn't have too many hitchhikers on it? I don't mind some but I'm worried that I'll get an unlucky one and have an infestation of something I don't know how to handle. So what are some vendors that you guys trust? Thank you in advance :D

I would try your local reef clubs first. I just got 150 lbs of beautiful Tonga/Fiji live rock covered in purple and neon pink coralline for $1/lb from a local reefer taking down his tank.

Craigslist is also good for rock from reefers leaving the hobby. Just be aware sometimes that rock has suffered from neglect. In those cases it should be cured well.

For online orders here are some additional options to what was mentioned above (in no particular order):

http://www.gulfliverock.com/

https://arcreef.com/

https://www.saltwaterfish.com/category-live-rock-sand

https://www.liverocknreef.com/

Also, BlueZooAquatics.com sells batches of live rock, but they also sell by the piece in their Collector’s Choice section so you can see the rock you are buying.

Overall, there is no way really to say one will give you more or less undesirables. In that respect it is a crapshoot. Everything you add to a tank brings risk though and the biodiversity provided by live rock is worth some risk.
