Yesterday I went to my lfs looking to buy live rock for my 55 gallon but the average cost of the rock was $10 a pound. For my 55 I need around 40 pounds at least and that puts me at $400. Is live rock always that expensive? Where could I get some for a more affordable price?

The best deals will be with other reefers in your area. Local clubs or faceplant is a good place to start lookin

Do you need all of it to be live? Buying some live to seed the rest will be the cheapest. Reef cleaners has great rock and if you give it a few weeks it’ll all be live for a fraction of the price.
