Where to purchase a Heteractis Magnifica?

i don’t have a LFS and the ones I do go to only regularly carry BTA’s. Any recommendations on a site to purchase M Anemone off the net that will be healthy. I only have a display tank so it needs to be ready to go.

Agree with Bob if it's not locally, you will have to QT. 99.9% online don't quarantine. As soon as they receive there shipment there are working in moving it out of there tanks to yours.

Have you asked your lfs to order one? One of the ones near me will let me special request items. They are not the speediest, may take a month or 2 to get. But i dont have to be home to pick up, and only pay the shipping thats included in the retail price. Since they will include my order in their wholesale order.

The only one will order special for you but you have to be there to get it the day it arrives so that would be no help.

Try getting in touch with Into The Blue Aquatics in Georgetown, they bought out KY Fish Supplies in Lexington and one of the owners is an anemone lover and should be willing to get a few in. They seem really nice so far, definitely not the run of the mill store.

As far as it being healthy, you should always be prepared to treat Magnifica's with cipro. Only way you can usually get away with not treating is if you buy an established one from someone's tank.

Here's a thread where this was discussed previously. I have had 2 mags and have not had to treat either one. One was from will at aquasd and the one I have currently from bluezooaquatics.

I live in Lexington. You can't treat in bag unfortunately, you have to setup a QT to treat because it's not a dip, it's a antibiotic and you have to do a full course so the infection doesn't become worse/resistant.

Between my twin brother and I, we've have about 7 different mags and all of them came in needing treatment, I can't hesitate enough to be prepared before buying one. These are not considered beginners anemones, until this treatment was found people just thought they were almost impossible to keep.

Very nice. Can you direct me to a good discussion on treating an Anemone? Do you have to have an established QT because I have an extra 5 gallon tank I bought for this but it is completely empty and not sure how you would keep the water quality great without media.

I agree you should always qt a new mag.
I'd guess 80-90% newly shipped need treatment, if you got one that did not need cipro you got really lucky, but only treat if you see visible signs of deflation, that's why it's important to qt and observe, also because bacterial infection can transfer to other nems in tank.

Before cipro this was considered a nearly impossible to keep anemone, cipro was a big game changer in many ways, not only in making it possible to keep them, but also in making us realize the difference in giving our clowns a natural host anemone and quicker response to accepting it as a host.

I’m planning on building a hospital tank to treat an Mag Anemone once I get it. What light would you recommend putting on it? That’s all it will be used for. I have a extra led bulb I use to grow my Chaeto in my sump that works great. I put it in a heat lamp assembly. Would that same set up work for an Anemone? It sure grows the heck out of the Chaeto!

I personally don't have an established QT tank, just a 10g I will set up on delivery of any new mag, and I start off w/ tank water from my display, tied in w/ a WC.
Cipro treatment requires a 100% WC daily, and I normally will pull that from my display, add new water to display.

Cipro treatment should only be done if you see the very distinct signs of bacterial infection, deflation of tentacles.
Typically a newly shipped mag will have this, it can look wonderful one minute, and next like it's at death's door, and it will go back and forth that way often for days/week or so.

If you do not see deflation there is no need to treat, so a period of qt and observation is important.

If you do see signs of deflation, time is critical, they will go downhill very fast w/out treatment, and this is why we advise having cipro on hand ready to go.
I see way too often people try to rush order cipro, and it just does not get there in time, and it's not expensive really, so good to just have on hand.

This is the only real difficult part in keeping mags really, once healthy I think it's pretty simple to keep them, given an established tank and a high perch for max light, and they tend to stay put.

Great idea putting fresh water in the DT and the water out of the DT in the QT. Great tip!
My wife works for a Dr so I’ll get the Cipro this week. I’m not getting a Mag for a bit I’m just getting everything ready.
As I understand it during the stay in the QT the lights should run a normal light cycle maybe 10 hours on and 14 off?
So to make it clear and make sure I didn’t miss anything. Mag comes in. Place in/on a coffee mug in QT with H2O from DT equipped with air stone, heater, and PH and watch him for a few days to make sure he stays inflated and healthy. If he stays this way transfer to DT. If not start cycle with Cipro according to thread about treating Anemone with Cipro. Am I missing anything?
And water changes daily.

This would be correct, 8-10 hours light, no feeding, eggcrate to screen from pumps, a bowl or smooth thing that lifts towards light they can mount to that is also easy to remove them from, they will go to it to be up towards light.

Cipro, if needed, becomes inert when contact w/ light, so dose at night while lights are off.

If you can find that, not many people give them up easily
