I had started planning my system researching equipment coral compatibility and the like when a thought occurred to me. Maybe it would be better to plan and build my quarantine/hospital tank first.
A smaller water volume may need more maintenance but would give me practical experience with working with a saltwater system and may help me avoid errors in planning and building the lager main tank.
What do you think?Good idea?

If your gonna have a qt I think that seems like the way to go. Seems like you have patience and that is going to take you very far in this hobby.

It is good to plan on having a quarantine system. But quarantine tanks are temporary pretty much by definition. It will take some time to get your display tank and equipment. Then you have to get your rock and presumably cycle the system. It is probably ok to set up the quarantine and start a few fish about the same time you start your cycle.
