Which Bubble King for a Red Sea 900 3XL?

@slief I'm considering a Bubble King for my heavily stocked Red Sea 900 3XL. What would you recommend?

I will be running a ClariSea SK-5000 fleece filter roller and need the skimmer to fit in the 15.5in x 11in skimmer compartment. I was thinking maybe the Deluxe 200 due to the 10.04in x 15.35in footprint (with pump). Also, it appears that refreshed models are beginning to roll out. Is the Deluxe 200 scheduled for a refresh? I noticed it is mostly out of stock. I would hate to drop that kind of money on a skimmer only to get the older model.

I don't have a specific model to recommend but I would get a skimmer that is rated slightly lower than your system since your roller will impact skimmer performance quite a bit. Also, make sure to check out the german version of the RE website for the most up to date product lines. I agree that it'd be a shame if you purchased through the USA website only to find out 2 months later that it's now obsolete.

The new BK SM 160 looks interesting as well. Any idea when it will be available in the US?

You’d definitely want to go with a skimmer that has a lower rating then your display size as the fleece filter will remove a lot of the solids before they become dissolved solids making the smaller skimmer far more consistent. That said, it really depends on your fish load. If you plan on having a medium to heavy fish load, then a Double Cone 180 would work well for you. A heavy fish load is 1/2” of fish per display gallon. If you are going to have a low fish load then a 160 sized skimmer will work well for you. The new SM 160’s should be in US stock in our next shipment from Germany. I‘ve sent an email to Germany to confirm the ETA on them.

im planning the same tank what skimmer would you suggest (I'm aiming for reef octopus, nyos but skimz might work too) I'm also having a heavy fish load as it is a predator mixed reef in planning gonna have clarisea too but it is gonna be pump fed with the pump under the downpipe and the dump turnover i'm aiming for is too much for clarisea

With the fleece filter, I’d lean towards the Double Cone 180. The 200 could end up inconsistent unless the clarisea isn’t getting all the solids. Since the feedpump will be under the down pipe, some water will bypass the clarisea and in that case. 200 sized skimmer could work but this is only if you have a truly heavy fish load (1/2” of fish per display gallon).

ya so the feed pump is 1500 gph but with the head pressure itll be just right at 1300 gph for clarisea ofc some water will bypass the pump so the rest of the water will pass through 4 filter socks (im not destroying the tray for the roller) so either way all of the water drained from the DT will pass through some wort of mechanical filtration before reaching the skimmer and yes i truly have a heavy load: (also do eels count in the (1/2"/G) rule because well eels are long

It's official, the BK DC200 fits the skimmer compartment of the 900 3XL, with room to spare, and it's already pulling out a ton of nasties! I couldn't be happier!

I've owned several skimmers (Deltec, H&S, RO, etc..) and I already know, this is by far the best skimmer that I've owned. Totally worth every penny. The build quality is unbelievable, only upstaged by the excellent customer service @slief! Thank you for all the replies, emails, and phone calls... it made all the difference!

He is a picture (1/3 full cup) two hours after dropping the brand new skimmer into the tank. I cannot wait to see what it does after it's actually broken in. And a few more showing the fitment right after I dropped it in.

I removed the filter socks and related equipment. I’m currently using the first compartment as a holding area for cycled live rock due to a recent tank swap but I think I’m going to repurpose it for my ClariSea SK-5000 filter roller and maybe a fuge. The “extension” sump is my new frag tank with an installed today Gen 5 Radion XR30 Pro Blue.

I see but dont u think an XR30 is super overkill?
the extension sump is only 22G but holds 16G of water an XR30 could light a 60G cube an AI prime could even light that extension sump i think an XR15 is good and that could even light a 30G cube

Yes, I completely agree. I should have went with the XR15. For some reason, I thought the extension sump was close to 24x24... one thing I forgot to measure.

Now, the plan is to move the XR30 to the display, for more coverage, and get a XR15 for the extension sump. At least I got the XR30 at a great deal.

24x24x24 is 60G the extension sump has a max cap of 22 gallons
