Hey y’all!

I think I’m going to switch my bulkheads to schedule 80 bulkheads.

I’m trying to decide between slip x slip and slip x thread. What do y’all think?

Also for buying sch80 bulkheads where do y’all usually go to buy them? I find that not a lot of the normal places I check have slip x slip or 1in ones in general.

Last - I was planning on having a bit of pvc come down from the bulkhead to a true union. Then switch the ultra flex pvc for the rest of it.

Any reason to not use ultra flex pvc over normal pvc? Would the smooth curves of flex pvc restrict less then using 45s and 90s?

Bulk Reef Supply for sch. 80 pvc fittings. I like using threaded fittings wherever I can. Lots of debate about restrictions from using 45 vs. 90. Use whatever works best for your build. Use threaded unions everywhere you can. Cheers! Enjoy the build.

What about flex pvc instead of using any shape of elbow.

What do people use to make the threaded bulk heads not leak. Not really interested in using Teflon tape.

I use "heavy duty" teflon tape. It does not shred like the cheap stuff. Any hardware store sells it.

I have switched to flex PVC (ultra flex actually) for all my lines. Slightly less head loss and much easier to run. Impersonally always use Sch40 slip bulkheads. They're cheap and why futz around with threads.

On a herbie drain I need to use a gate valve. Is it best to have the gate valve higher closer to the bulk head or lower closer to the sump / drain area? Does it matter at all?

Also do people usually glue the pipes in the tank into the bulk heads? Or do you dry fit them so you can take them apart later?

Will the pressure pop off the pipe on the return?

Closer to sump is better IME, unless you run a basement sump which can make adjustments a pain. I friction fit internal drain standpipes but solvent weld the return.

Keep in mind Sch.40 BH's and Sch.80 BH's have different hole sizes. If the hole is already drilled, you'll have to use what size/schedule fits that, or re-drill a new hole.

!!! Ive asked that twice now and no one has said they are different sizes!

Oh ya just looked on BRS! Sch 40 needs a 45mm hole saw and sch 80 needs a 48mm.... dang!

One more question now. Since it looks like I am going to have to use these ABS sch40 bulkheads. Will use the flex pvc put more pressure on the bulk head possibly leading it to crack.

I think you should take a look at this vid. Will answer a lot of your questions.

I'd put the valve close to the bulkhead for stability and also to visually reference what you're closing off.

Yes. Glue it.

Will the pressure pop off the pipe on the return?
Probably. No way I'd chance that. Again, cement it in place.

Take time to plan everything before you start.

In the video he says you should "glue in the threaded nipple from ball valve to pump inlet." Does he mean pvc glue, teflon paste or tape, or his preferred method of silicone?
