I have tried hydro evos and hydro third generations, but the low frequency hum at night transmits through the floor and wall somehow and keeps me awake at night. The tank is just on the other side of the wall where my pillow is.

Only pumps that I have used that are silent past 6" from the motor are Tunze pumps... even when ramping up and down.
I use vortechs, which are way quieter than they used to be before the QD came out, but if I was doing a bedroom tank, Tunze for sure!

The MP40 QD vortechs are quiet in that I can't hear them over general house noise and other tank equipment, usually, and definitely not from another room. The MP10s are actually noisier than the MP40s because of the higher frequency they produce. So you might be fine with those, but if you really want quiet, go tunze.

Vortech QD models and Tunze Stream pumps are nearly silent in my experience. The Neptune WAV pumps claim to be, but I haven't seen them running in person and they require an Apex to run.

Does anyone know if the cheaper turbelle are as quiet as the stream or nano stream? If I got 2 pumps, which would you recommend for mixed reef 135 gallon?

Thanks

maybe someone else can chime in, but I think the only difference is they are not controllable. And if you're not looking for a controllable pump, there may be others that are silent as well.

I value quiet pumps and have used Tunze pumps for decades.
They are on my all time list of quiet and dependable pumps.
I also like my Vortech MP40QD's. They were nearly dead silent at first, but have seemed to picked up a tiny amount of motor noise after about a year and a half.

My QD40 is still as quiet as when I got it, but I don't ramp up more than 50%, usually around 35-40%. When it does get noisy, a vinegar bath will quiet it down. Unless a dreaded Collonista snail gets in there and rattles around.

I'm getting a tiny amount of noise from the dry side at 100%

I have a pair of WAV's that I would consider virtually silent. The only noise I detect is an occasional vibration depending how the cord is coming out of the tank. I am only running them up to 40%.

+1. I don't think I've ever heard my WAV's.

My Tunze 6055s are extremely quiet but you can hear them if other things are turned off. The skimmer & return pump inside the stand make more noise.

How loud is it?

I am starting to wonder if this is an A/C 60 Hz problem.

I have 4 MP40wQD's on my 180g. I don't hear any of them, but I don't run them more 50-60%

honestly, I don't think you can get quieter than the tunzes. if they were the only thing running and the house was quiet, you can hear them from a few feet away... several feet away and you would have trouble hearing them.

I am running 2 WAV's on my 150. The only time I hear them is when they are on pulse mode (55%), they make a click sound when the prop stops.
Other than that, they are dead silent when running.

Agree that the WAV pumps are very quiet (except for the vibrating cords). My Jebaos all got very quiet after about 18 months .... that's about the time they mostly stopped working LOL.
