Hey all

What fleece rollers are you guys using? Has it given you any trouble and if so how so? Trying to set myself up for success down the road and can definitely see the filter socks getting neglected.

I ran a BM filter roller for a couple months. Took it out and went back to 7" socks.
For me it let too much detrius pass through into the sump which is the opposite of what I wanted.
I also run a very slow gph of 100-150 through my sump so speed is not the issue.

If you can see ur filter socks getting neglected then who’s to say the roller mat won’t get neglected as well. Personally filter cup and padding works well for me. Find a reusable pad you can use on Amazon

Trigger platinum sump

it’s been great for me. I have a Clari sea still in the box if interested

I think I may actually have the ability to DIY one. After looking at what a lot of them are built like they seem to be not much more than 2 spools and a stepper motor. I figure even one Id have to manually advance would be an improvement on filter socks!

Not quite following since I am not very good at DIY stuff, but if you can get a small motor that will advance yours, you could just plug it into an Alexa smart plug or similar and program it to kick on for you!

If you do, please share. I'm getting tired of innumerable issues with this $600 Deltec thing. Hecks, I'd love a manual cranked one; just go down and crank it once a day and disconnect it if I'll be gone for a week.

I have a Trigger Platinum and love it. But I have come to realize that if you run a controller (I have Hydros) you already have all the fleece control you need. You can replicate the Trigger system using three water level sensors. You COULD get by with two. And you'll need one of the Drive ports to either drive your motor directly or engage a relay that drives the motor.

It would be a great DIY project for someone with either CNC machining for acrylic or a lot of 3D printing horsepower. I would be willing to help with the design if you were going the controller route.

I echo this one. Been through them all and filter pad/floss is easiest for lowest maintenance - just toss.

I have to say the clari sea is a god send , change the roller and forget about it , I also like the fact if I lightly toss up the sand a bit with a turkey baster or the rock work you can hear the roller kicking in pulling all the crud out , I’d never go back to socks .

Ive used a Clarisea and a Bubble Magus, the BM's fleece is not fine enough and takes nothing out. I went back to a Clarisea and it works to perfection, Crystal clear water and sump.

Part of the issue is if you are retrofitting into a filter sock holder or if you are designing your sump specifically with a roller in mind. I went the latter route so I think I can’t really change to a Clarisea now. I have a bubble magnus so I hope it will work well enough (see my build thread if you want to know why I haven’t started up the tank yet). Good points on the diy options. Definitely do-able and would be interested in seeing what people come up with

I have to check out the Deltec roller. Didn’t know they had one.

but there is zero chance of me running filter socks because I don’t have the time or will to change them out.

I am running the Klir 7. no complaints, runs perfectly.

I got the first gen Klir-4 and it's been nothing but a headache. The motor doesn't seem strong enough to get the roll started and constantly gets stuck, which requires pulling the whole thing out. The few times it has worked it pulled the entire roll through and wasted ~$30. I pulled the motor and sensor off and put a 1/2 inch pipe through the top roller and roll it by hand.

I hear the 2nd gen fixes a lot of the issues from the first but I wouldn't recommend it.
