I've been in the hobby for 5 years and have been lurking here all that time. I must confess that I should have signed up a long time ago but I'm now in a situation where I need the input from all of you. I want to post a thread telling the story of becoming a clownfish breeder and the approximately 200 babies I've ended up with. Need some feedback from all of you about just how marketable they will be in about 6 months. Here's an photo of one of them to give you a taste of what's coming:

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to R2R! So many people lurk for a long time before joining (myself included). You'll wonder why you didn't join sooner! It's very satisfying helping others with their questions, and also very helpful to be able to reach out with your questions rather than trying to google and find forum threads from others.

I agree the fishbreeding forum posted above would be great. There's also a livestock selling sub-forum on here that you can list them when they are ready for sale that should help you hook up with potential buyers. Very popular for coral frags, but also see fish as well.

Not sure who your area is with the saltwater hobby, but if you have 200 you might end up reaching out to LFSs to sell some in bulk if you can't sell enough directly to the aquarists.

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions. What started out as a desperate desire to know what the offspring of a particular pair would look like, is quickly evolving into something more. Well, now I know and I’m not disappointed. Quite a few of these are turning into pretty babies and the option of culling them all is quickly disappearing. There are just too many lookers.

I’ll admit that the fish breeding forum seems the obvious choice, but my goal is to get as many eyeballs and opinions as possible from the members, and I can’t help but think that the breeding forum is less frequented than many others. Essentially, once I post the pictures, what I need to know is, if this fish were to, say, appear on Divers Den, would you pause for a closer look, or blow right on by. Because the next step is a big one.

Well, there's the livestock marketplace forum too, as well as breeders.

Sometimes, if you make a poll, it will headline on the site and draw viewers.

Would you buy this fish
a) I want two. Name your price
b) Very interested
c) Maybe someday
d) Don't quit your day-job

Welcome to R2R

Good looking clown. Posting in breeding forum doesn’t necessarily limit your audience. Post with a catchy title and you can bump occasionally for more views.

Same for the selling forum. I’m willing to bet you have some really nice stock. There’s also a section where you can ask what you should price something. I’m sure you will not have a problem selling them.

Again #WelcometoR2R

Being able to breed fish is a fairly small part of the equation of selling fish even if they are nice looking representations of the species or strain that you are working with. Finding a consistent outlet or outlets, providing consistent production of fish, figuring out what to do when you have too many/too few fish, figuring out the business/paperwork/certification stuff, and so much more. It is a challenge for a small scale breeder to make any money especially when they are first starting, therefore it is a good idea to find out what others who may have had some successes are doing (preferably not in your area where you would potentially be encroaching on their business "turf").

In spite of your hesistancy, you may find that the R2R breeding forum or Clownfish and Anemone forum are both places where other fish breeders frequent and may be willing to share their opinions about your fish and about the potential of marketing your fish. Good luck!

Many thanks for the responses and great advice from all of you. I have decided, when ready, to post the thread in the Fish Breeding forum as many suggest.

Very nice! Beautiful fish!
