T. crocea or T. maxima?

Given all things equal, what clam is simply, just easier to maintain?>

In my opinion, they're both about the same. If you can meet the needs of one, you can meet the needs of the other. Supposedly, T. crocea are slightly more light demanding, but I don't think it's enough to really matter.

ok

i am just curious because I have always heard of local folks being able to keep croceas much easier and longer than maximas

wanted to test the real reefing crowd

In my opinion the Crocea's are easier, small Maxima's can be a bit of a pain. They tend to die if they are stressed and it is very easy to stress them.

I've kept both with very little trouble. I currently have a Crocea and it's doing great. Crocea clams are very light demanding. Maximas are too but Crocea like shallow water and a lot of light.

This is my crocea. I have had it for a year and a half, and do nothing special at all for it. I do feed the tank heavily, small feedings of a frozen mix several times daily. I can't offer anything about maximas, but this particular crocea is not demanding. As you can see in the pic, it is just under the surface. My light is a 250 mh, 14k, with actinic supplementation.

what about dersa clams? After my first attempt and failure at keeping a clam I been a little on edge about trying another one.

Agree with Skinz. Little maximas never seem to settle in for me either. I won't buy them unless their at least 3 inches now. Croceas, I've never had a problem with.

I would have to say crocea's are easier than maximas and I've found that crocea's you can get away with less light than a maxima. Derasa's being the easiest IMHO. For what its worth though I have all 3 at the bottom of a 20" tall 100g lit with 4x54w ATI t5's on WH ballasts and they are all doing great.
