Picked up some lyre tail anthias earlier this week. Which region would you guys say this male lyretail is? The store owner said it recently just transitioned. I would like to know what region this male came from to determine its coloration. He looks like a dull redish purple right now. Thank you in advance

I see male lyretail and Hawaiian yellow possibly

The pictures confer a typical Lyretail Anthias, Pseudanthias squamipinnis. Definitely not a Hawaiian Longfin (Pseudanthias hawaiiensis) nor a Hawaiian Yellow (Odontanthias fuscipinnis), although either would be quite the coup as they are expensive fish that are somewhat hard to come by!

So you think its a fiji phenotype? How long does it take for males to achieve their full colorations?

I believe it is from Fiji based on the flatter profile of the caudal fin, and the dark area of the posterior portion of the dorsal fin. The Indian Ocean variant has a more lunate caudal fin, and lacks the dark area. As far as transition timeline, every fish is different. I have an Indian Ocean male that has been transitioning for several months and is still uniformly orange (albeit a bit darker orange than the female).

My guess is its a transitioning male Lyretail from Kenya, they tend to have an orange belly and red body, whereas the males from Fiji are essentially red throughout the body.

I’ll take more pics this afternoon. Thanks so much guys for the input.

One thing is for sure - once it fully transitions, you'll know which phenotype it is. :)

Heres more pics of the male.
