Going to be starting a new build soon and wondered what is the good overflow boxes out there and how do you determine what size you need? I heard good things about synergy reef ghost overflow. It's going to be a 65 gallon rimless. Thanks

I recently looked at the various options and figure that they're all about the same. Work out what kind of turnover you need and buy one rated for double that amount. Personally I went with modular marine because they stock the longer/larger units that I needed for my build.

The most reputable overflow I have read about is LifeReef. If you don't go with them, I would at least go with one that has a similar design. Keep in mind that most people would recommend drilling over a HOB overflow.

I am drilling.

+1 on modular marine. Quality overflow at a good price.

I dont run one personally, but everything I've seen/read says modular marine is where its at. I will be using one next build.

I went with a 12” Modular Marine overflow for my 36x18x20 tank and I’m very happy with it. I prefer the more robust acrylic construction of the MM. Originally I went with the Synergy Reef Shadow, but had to sell it as it was too wide at 16” to accommodate the AP700 mounting arms. :(

What are your thoughts about the three drains?

I prefer the 3 drain “Beanimal style” drains as it affords you the ability to adjust precisely and dial it in to make it virtually silent as well as piece of mind through redundancy with the secondary siphon and emergency drain. In the past I have run over the back with a Stockman standpipe as well as reef ready with a Durso standpipe. I much prefer the Beananimal method.

I'm not familiar with those terms or styles as this will be my first custom build. So essentially the third drain is an emergency backup drain?

And you're referring to a drilled tank with the "beanimal" style correct?

Whether it’s drilled on the back glass panel or not, in simple terms... Durso - single drain, Herbie - dual drains and Beananimal - three drains. Beananimal provides you with the best tuning capabilities coupled with the most redundancy.

16" Shadow would be perfect on this size tank. Especially rimless. Size is determined by the flow rate. We have designed the shadow to be pretty universal. With lower flow rates you can reduce the plumbing down.

Do you have a picture of your plumbing?

I do not. I’m still building my stand... hopefully putting together a photo rich build thread soon! :D

How do you go about plumbing it a certain way? I always see these fancy master plumb jobs but the real key is to get water underneath quietly?

You will need a gate valve on the primary siphon plumbing down to the sump. That will allow you to dial in the flow to eliminate noise. As far as the exterior box itself, here is a YouTube video showin the plumbing within the box...

In the video, the shortest u-tube is the primary siphon. The plumbing pipe attached to that below the box will have the gate valve for adjustment.
