Let's say I managed to flatten pH curve throughout a day. So I have options to run the tank from 8.05 ~ 8.3, or 8.15 ~ 8.2. Average pH through a day is basically the same.

Now the question is, which is better? Is it better to have pH peak higher during the day, or better to reduce pH day night swing?

Corals are calcifying more during the day, as alk consumption are two to three times higher during lights on than during lights off. Then from this angle, having pH higher during the peak calcification sounds more beneficial. But the convention wisdom suggest less swing is better. WDYT?

This is super tough. I think consistently over or at 8.15 is better. The coral will consistently be at an optimal pH and corals can grow, but they will grow at some level regardless at any pH above 8.0.
Either way it should be fine, but I think the 8.15 - 8.2 may be 'safer' (either way it's fine), but it may just be more solid overall. But as long as you have a pH peak at 8.2 or 8.3 that's good. My pH peaks at like 8.15. Trying to get it to 8.2, but my Monti cap and birdsnest still grow well.

I do not think there's a clear answer to that exact example.
I don't expect there will be a clear answer. More like a thought practice, theorycrafting. How will you reason about choosing which case to run a tank, given both are relatively same in terms of difficulty and cost.
