Which protein skimmer is better?

Thank you I love it, it's a perfect size for an apartment but when I move out to a house I'm getting the 350, always wanted that size

I run the 120 on a 65 gallon, reefer 250. I also saw the complaints of the tricky to remove cup but haven't had any issues myself... i'm relentless on maintenance so no smutz gets built up. The 120 i think is their smallest and doesn't have a drain plug in the cup. I think anything larger does. Cleaned X-mass eve and skimming a bit wet.

I am running the Nyos 120 on my reefer 250, as @Scurvy mentioned I pull the cup once a week and have had no issues at all with it. The key for me is noise and it is dead silent, and started pulling skimmate very quickly! The foot print is an additional bonus, it takes up about half of the provided skimmer section in my sump.

I like the Aquamaxx line of skimmers. I have the CO-1, Q3 and HOB-1. Pretty awesome skimmers

That's what I'm looking for, (dead silent) so I think I will looking around for reefer around me if I can have a look to a running skimmer and then I will decide I think. The Nyos or bubble Magnus, this 2 are my favorite.
 
Reef Octopus skimmers have been around for quite some time now and have very good reputation. The new Aquatrance pumps are very quite and seem to be size well for the skimmers. You can't go wrong with a Classic 150 or 110. The Vertex 130/150 can be a bit of a pain breaking in and adjusting, the trick is playing with the air flute, but once dialed in pull like a beast. Some of the finest bubbles I have seen produced by a Pin wheel. Bubble Magus are another skimmer that seem to have proven them selves, but seem to be having some problems with DC pumps, I would stick with the AC pump myself. Nyos I am not sure of I would what tell Gen 2 comes out, with cups hard to remove or not at all and lately I have have be hearing of pump failures. The thing that bothers me is EcoTech seems to be running from these things and not dealing with them very well and I have prices for replacement parts are very expensive. So that would give RO a big thumbs up as parts very easy to get and are reasonable. Vertex are very quiet skimmers. For the Air Silencer noise you may want to try and add some filter floss into the Silencer or cut a piece of foam to fit inside like the Vertex skimmers have. If you can fit a skimmer that has the pump outside the skimmer would be better as you loose quite a bit of body space with the pump inside. Vertex as an example many retailers will tell you, if you are looking at the Omega 180 but have room for the 150 get the 150. If I where you I would look at the Reef Octopus Classic 110 INT or RO Super Reef 1000 or the Vertex 130.

I have a Reef Octopus Classic 202-S in my Reefer 450 and it works very well. For a smaller tank or smaller bio load I would recommend the smaller 152-S. My only complaint with these skimmers is that they are a bit noisy. Reef Octopus has been around for a long time and proven their worth.

I no this isn't a sell thread but I have a brand new vertex 130 I've decided to go with a little bigger tank when I get going so would need a bigger one

Didn't mean to hit post yet.

Could probably save u a good bit if your interested I've had it for a year but only been out of the box to make sure everything was like it should be. Pm if interested.
 
How big is the space u got for the skimmer chamber ? Have u looked into vertex alpha / bubble king skimmer?
 
Man with my reef octopus i can pull the cup off with two fingers.

I can also micro adjust the gate valve. And its smooth.

With my old sca 302

I had two use two hands to rip the cup off, one time skimmate fell back in the tank.

The impeller doesnt restart all the time. The "gate valve" is just a tube you turn and it gets stuck. Then i cant see where its at either. I hated this skimmer.

But it skimmed well, but so did the old airstone skimmers back in 1980
 
So I had an issue with hair algae. I was using an SWC180 modified. It was good but would have an issue with the pump not starting after I would turn it off. I decided to invest and I mean invest in a Lifereef skimmer. A month after being placed on-line with my tank, no hair algae. I mean it literally disappeared. Doing nothing different. The guy Jeff will spend the time to talk to you about his skimmers and his other products. He has invested in his materials and quality of work. This guy makes him himself and completely stands behind them. If you need to ever change the pump, no worries nor special 'I can't find just anywhere' pump either. The one I have uses a mag 9.5 pump. It's a beast.

To choose between them, I would choose the Vertex. To choose period, it would be neither. My opinion......I have had a few different skimmers always looking for the best and have paid as high as $800 for an H&S. Great skimmer, but my current Aquamax EM200 has been my fav so far. Also have a Aquamax Q2. Nice skimmers. Very very efficient skimmers.
