Which Recommendations Do You Listen To?

Sorry to derail… to the op I like the old skool guys cause I’m one of them but it’s far and few today and hard to get in touch with one of them… my best advice is pick 1 or 2 with a tank to back their words and get to know them and follow their ways! It’s really that simple and the ones around today are more than willing to help! Unless there an Influencer on Instagram seems like most ain’t got time for nobody but there sponsors… lol sucks the hobby has came to this…

On an unrelated topic I was searching the internet with Google and found a suggestion from a pillar of wisdom that a historical martyr had actually died by suicide.

Turns out many people just look for answers that reinforce their current beliefs, and I give them an appropriate answer when I detect those kinds of enquiries.

If people need wisdom, or the truth, I try to explain that as simply as I can. I also try to offer links to people who can read a thing for themselves to help with general understanding.

If you ask which salt is better, I often say Morton's. I think it's Kosher?

But the question about knowledge and who has it is a valid one. My casual observation on the subject is that there is a war on knowledge that is being fought to hide the past and rewrite it to direct folks along a strange path moving into the future where knowledge and truth are subjective, or fluid.

Again, I say Morton's.

Shalom.

People who use gif's and emoji's tend to be more trust worthy for supplying answers.:face-with-hand-over-mouth::face-with-rolling-eyes::cool:

I research a lot before doing anything. Even after I research I'm go very slow to change anything.

I've been in the hobby long enough and made lots of mistakes. I now know which things work and which things don't work.
If I still follow the wrong path, I know how to quickly compensate.

Yeah, most of them are just marketing products. I noticed they only come on here (if at all) just to promote something.

I tend to lean towards taking the advice of people who I see regularly helping and giving good information around the forum. Things like positive reactions on comments (likes, loves, 2 thumbs) is also an indicator, in my mind, the advice is somewhat solid or has the general approval of community members.

But everyone and their mamma has a different option and successful methods, so I'm willing to listen to and give all kinds of advice a chance!

Lol! I can have that removed. I’m not a vendor or anyone significant.
Nooo, it’s well deserved, I have learned a lot from your posts. Thank you for your commitment to this community and for sharing your knowledge!

I especially listen to people who have a checkmark next to their name
I’ve been doing that also, check marks and puppy avatars mostly for years. As you can see from the picture of my tank I took just this morning my coral growth is exploding and their color is beyond popping. Those fish are fat and happy! This tank has been up and running over 2 1/2 years, stunning I know.

I wonder if I can get an "X" next to my name?

That would be great, along with an "X Badge", what it would be for? Hmm.

I generally consider the hobbyists start date, how many, well explained, similar responses and even then rarely just follow through without doing my part to learn as well.
Sorry to anyone that is new to the game and sharing their experiences just based on their own passion for their new-found hobby. The reality is this stuff is expensive, the information is meaningful and the best information is gained from those that have walked the walk

Going by start date?
Don't let the date fool you as I'm sure I was on RC before Randy.

The thing with this is, some have been in for decades and may have just found this site. Hard to know who is a freshy and who is an old salt.

I was on rc years ago and forgot my user name password so I came here.
Like late 90's early 00's.
Been there done that, I was getting my chemistry advice from Russell "ORCA - Oceans blend" back then. Is it bad to say I joined here to purchase sps?

That’s $10 please! Haha oh sorry that’s Twitter I mean X

I have found that as mentioned you can find answers that fit what you want to believe. And in many threads you will find information that contradicts another post in the same thread. As for dates, I have to agree. I have been a reefer since 1989, yet only joined R2R in 2021 under my first user name. Changed when I became a sponsor. How to differentiate between good advice and not so good, IMO is looking at more than one thread. Finding information that is repeated throughout many threads and has more than anecdotal evidence. As stated what works for one doesn’t always work for another. The great mystery I believe is in that all of our tanks have different chemical make ups and bacterial formations. This could be why a proven method doesn’t work for someone yet works for many others. In all but the most dire of circumstances take any change slow and pay close attention to changes that occur. I personally prefer methods that are as natural as possible and try to avoid chemical interventions. If you are in the forum long enough and spend time reading various threads you will develop a sense of who knows their stuff and who is just talking.

And to round out the conversation, I sometimes am sitting alone in the bar or in a basement and my answers may be completely different under those circumstances than when I am sitting in court listening to the arguments made by the prosecution. How can the reader figure out what is going on inside the life of another person posting a reply on here?

I would trust the advice of the guy alone at the bar or in his basement but it would really seal the deal if he had a puppy avatar!
