Hey guys I’m looking for a skimmer for my ~20 gallon frag tank. Do you recommend the

IceCap K1-Nano Protein Skimmer

Or the

AquaMaxx NF-1 Nano Protein Skimmer - in-Sump.

Or do you guys suggest somthing else? It will be placed below the frag tank in a 10g sump that runs about half full of water. I’m looking to keep this purchase below 150$. Below are the links to both items but please suggest others if you feel there are better options in my price range :)

I have had good luck with the Reef Octopus skimmers in the past. I am currently using a NYOS which I really like. It is super quiet and come apart easy for cleaning.

A 20 gallon tank will not produce enough skim to run that size skimmer. Bigger is not better with skimmers.

I would get the Ice Cap personally.

I had my icecap on a 45 JBJ and loved it. Condensed tanks and the icecap was used on a 20 long diy AIO for a bit and still did great. If I was to do another small tank, I would run another one.

Do you guys think it’s even necessary to run a skimmer on a frag tank with no fish?

I run one on all my frag tanks. They are all undersized and skim very dry, but as long as it doesn’t pull nutrients to 0, it doesn’t hurt.

Skimmers do more than skim. They aerate as well.

But, they are not truly needed for a frag tang or even a tank with fish. There are other forms of nutrient export that can be done in place.

This is the same reef octopus I have and it’s awesome. My tank is a small 24gal nano.
