Which tang would you recommend for a 4ft 90 gallon tank? Will have a foxface and a lawnmower blenny and dwarf angel as well, just some fish it could have conflicts with.

1. Scopas Tang, heard conflicting views on how big they really get

2. Blue eye kole tang or yellow eye

3. Tomini tang

Thanks

That would be an appropriate size tank for a kole tang. They also tend to be less aggressive than most other tangs IME.

That’s what I was thinking wanted a zebrasoma tang but yellow would not work with foxface and other zebrasomas just get to big it seems. Thanks I think I will go with the blue eye if I can actially find one for sale.

Some bristletooth give lawnmower blennies a really hard time as they are both detrivores. Not sure how bad blue eyes are as I've never tried to mix them but seen kole and Tomini try to kill them.

Yeah that’s what I was worrying about especially since my blenny is very timid and shy and only grazes off natural algae. That’s another reason I wanted a zebrasoma. Will have to wait and see I guess thanks.

in the 90 you'd probably be just fine adding any 2 of the 3 choices as long as they're both on the smaller side and you add them at the same time. IF they grow to the point that you don't feel they fit in the tank (years down the road) remove them and either start with new smaller ones or drop back to whichever one becomes your favorite

That actually might work with the Scopas? Perhaps if I find one I really like I may try that idea of re homing later. But I realy want to keep the fish for his whole life in my tank so possibility if I find a Scopas I really like. Thanks for suggestion.

I don’t think you’d have issues with any of them for as long as you’d like to keep them. None of those grow that large as far as I know. Btw plan on their life being longer than you’d probably think. I’ve had several of my current tangs for 12 years and had a yellow that went from mine to my parents tank for 15+ years and then to a local store where it was kept as a pet and passed to a long term maintenance client only because they were trusted and loved the story of the fish (it had some crazy fins at that point).

That actually brings up a good question how long are these fish supposed to live?

My Tomini is small and peaceful. I Qt-ed her in a 40 g for six months with a fairy wrasse. Now she is in my 180 and gets along with all the other fish (don't have any blennies, though). Super nice fish.

I have a purple tang in my 72 bow front that I’ve had for a couple months now. Everything is going well with him and he’s even a little bit on the timid side.

Thanks for all help. So a Scopas could live in a 90 long term with the fish I have? Well perhaps I will look into one. I am glad to hear that the tomini is peaceful I expected it to be the most out of the ones I wanted so that’s another plus. I always wanted a purple one of my favorite fish just was always under the impression that I would need to move it some day because of temper and size was on my original stock plan until I heard from others and did some research that it would most likely need to be moved some day especially since I have a lot of fish for my sizes tank. Would love to have but would hate for it to suffer or kill other fish in my tank in the long run. Do you think a purple is doable in the long run? In a 90? Thanks for all of this help I am still considering all choices and now have a purple on my mind.

Do you think I could qt small tang or flame angel in a 10 gallon?

X2.

Sometimes they’re fine, other times it’s not a good pairing.

Yellow grow slow IME, purple do too typically, but size-wise most bristlooth tang is better suited for a 90 (kole, blueye, tomini, white tail, etc)

Yeah that is what I was thinking just wanted a zebrasoma besides a yellow tang but it seems no other option suitable for my tank exist I will observe some fish at my LFS before I decide on one. Thanks

That’s a beautiful fish and I hope you post a couple of photos of it so that we can see it.

Will try and get a better one tommorow. He is always moving and grazing unlike my foxface that likes to swim a little and rest in a cave. Already ate Nori and grazed right when he was put in.
