So we are starting to restock our tank following a huge crash and lengthy fallow period to make sure there’s no parasites left. We would like some of the less common tangs for a different look. Anyone have suggestions for tangs that are still colourful but less run of the mill? We fancy an Atlantic Blue for starters. We currently have a reefer 625 and will be upgrading to an 8 foot within a year so should have plenty of space.

Vampire, Achilles, Gem, Mimic(Mimic tangs can vary in color and rarity greatly from region to region)
Unicorn could work in your 8 foot. Takes longer then a year to grow out from a young juvenile. Some report you need more then 8feet but sometimes you get lucky with a fish that has a more docile behavior then their brothers and sisters.
I really like the colors of the powder blue tang. tho that’s a more common tang, it’s still my favorite variant.

Dussumeiri tang is a rare beauty. Also Mata. Orange shoulder.
These tangs can be jerks, very agressive from my experience even when added last!

But yeas great looking fish, but might explain why there not so commen.

Scopas is defs one of my faves and super underrated!

Vlamingi is another peaceful one that you dont see very often, they just gdt very big!

Most tangs will have some form of aggression though, best to try add them not to far apart from each other

I disagree with your conclusion. They are uncommon because they are drab and boring in their juvenile stage. And expensive. People don’t want drab and expensive tangs. All tangs are aggressive it just depends on how aggressive. The ones listed are not more aggressive than zebrasoma sp.

Im going to agree to disagree here :)

I find the Acanthurus species to be the worst with agressive behavior. zebrasoma can be but adding them together will give you better results. I currently have a purple and a scopas that get along fine!

I wouldnt say drab(but each to there own), and i guess location might play a part on price as there defs not expensive fish here.

But also everyone has different experiences so I guess it it can be hard to know some times for sure with tangs in general. So i somewhat agree with what your saying for sure.

This is why its great to hear everyones experiences so then the user asking the question can hopefully make there best choice!

As always happy reefing :)

I've always liked the look of either a sohal tang or a clown tang. They both get a reputation of being very aggressive though.
A chevron tang is also one that I don't see in the hobby very often and they're absolutely beautiful in opinion....when young at least. I've never seen an adult in person but I know they don't stay orange as an adult.

I love how they both look too but the horror stories are why I won't keep them.

I've been close to getting a clown tang before but I decided not to because of their agression, plus my tank isn't big enough for it long term.

I've never even considered a sohal or chevron, but those are because I'm cheap and they are both fairly expensive tangs, plus the sohal gets too big and is also very agression from what I've heard.

Thanks for the ideas. Settled on a lavender, bariene, Atlantic blue and freckle face
Dussumieri amd fowleri are the best as I had almost all tangs..they are the best hands down

Stay away from the Clown and Sohal tang. Both are some of my favorites, but, even in a future 8 ft tank they usually are tyrants. How about a Gem tang? I have 6 in my 225 gal tank. I have a Gem tang, Purple tang, D. Sailfin tang, Achilles tang, Blonde Naso tang, and a Tomini tang. I have kept 2 Acanthurus tangs in a 120 before with no issues as well.

I have 2 purples, a gem, a powder brown, powder blue and a tomini. I know those are fairly common but they all get along and are great tank mates. Any 10 second skirmishes are easily resolved by some other tang swimming by as a distraction or the sight of food or anything that might be food.
