So here’s the scoop, I just got my yellow banded possum wrasse delivered two days ago, this shipment went amazing unlike the last one… the seller made things right and I got a real winner this time around, but here’s the deal he’s tiny like one inch total, he’s a cutesy for sure, currently alone in the 40 gallon qt and am deciding which tank to put him in and I need help deciding,
Two options, first my evo, there a pair of skunkclowns in there that are hosting a feather duster and now a year or so later are too big for my Hawaiian feather and ticking it off, so they are headed to sumpland. This evo is packed with corals, great structure and a bunch of sps for added environment, and a amphiopod problem. Should I keep him in here while he grows out or
I have a 150 Sca that is new, nov and just had it first batch of qt fish enter, I plan on peaceful small fish for the majority in the 150…
Sorry for the long thread but wanted to explain the two habitats, thoughts on which home?

At least a 20 gallon tank but if adding other fish, consider minimum 40b tank

So the 150 gallon for this guy then, was leaning that way as wrasses can really swim around when they move

I’d put it in the evo. Especially if removing the clowns. These are some of the most cryptic wrasses out there. It stays tiny, will love your pod problem and you’ll most likely see it a ton more. It will literally disappear in the 150. An established tank will definitely be more beneficial and natural for it then a brand new one. Just my opinion

Disappearing into the 150 isn’t an issue for me, could even move him there when he gets a lil bigger and thought he might enjoy the mature system to start with and eat some of my problems….I don’t know how fast they grow but he is legit 1” max, practically the smallest fish I think you could ever get.
end of the day he’ll go in which ever makes the most sense from everybody’s experience

Well as I monitor this guy before meds start….leaning towards the 150 as he’s a real swimmer, as I work on stocking list for my 150 are there other wrasses that would get along with this guy?

No. IMHO that’s a bad move, these fish are VERY skittish and will need to be adapted to frozen. I find they will thrive in 13-15g’s not JUST 20g’s. You would be better putting him into the smaller tank if you get rid of the Skunk clowns.

Any wrasses from:
Anampses
Macropharyngodon
Cirrhilabrus
Pseudojuloides
PseudocheilinOPS
Paracheilinus
Xenojulis

Should be alright with this fish.

I have had a 0.25” blue star leopard and am SO glad I started her out in my 20g even though it’s “Frowned” upon. She’s thriving in there and is nowhere near as active as people say she is. I also have other fish in the larger tank that would’ve competed with her so I took no chances and want to grow her out. She’s now just hitting one inch after almost 7 months.

Thanks for all the input, greatly appreciate it…so your thinking throw him in the 13 with the skunks out, let him eat all the pods he can get him on frozen food solidly and then move him to the larger system down the road when he’s getting closer to the two inch size

Attached is a pic from a couple months ago to show the structure he’d be, has grown a bit more sps structure since then as well

That’s the better option to do with these fish yes. Especially a wrasse as finicky as a Possum or Macropharyngodon or Anampses. IMO he will do just fine in there long term aswell, I find that these fish only swim a ton when there is almost no rockwork to hide in, they’re being chased/stressed out. If you can get it through QT then that’s a great move however I find these are some of the worst wrasses to try get through QT.

I was starting to feel that it would be difficult to get this guy through qt, have fed the qt pods which he devoured but haven’t seen him go after anything frozen yet, have tried all of my foods, about 9 different types, ground to mouth size nothing yet…. Switching him into this tank today, will keep you updated… thx for all of the responses really appreciate it

Well did the move today, which meant everything came out of the nano for its yearly scrub and trim…the skunks are out, feather duster already happy their gone… 5 minutes after acclimation this guy is out eating voraciously already cruising along the lower rockwork already… good call!!!
