hello everyone I’m new to the hobby, so I’m trying to decide on either getting an 50g AIO tank or a 70g tank with sump. Which one would you recommend?

Tia

70 gallon bc you will have more volume which can help with parameter swings & you would eventually regret getting the smaller one :)

Welcome to reef2reef!!!
All depends on what type of fish do you want ?

i love aio but they can take a little more work to control water quality.

Thank you, eventually I would like clownfish, dottyback, tuxedo urchin, and still trying to figure out what else I can put in there with the space they’ll have.

The reason y I was thinking of even doing a 50g was bc it is AIO, maybe easier since I’m a beginner.

AIO is easier in my opinion. No need to worry about plumbing

Welcome to R2R! I would prefer the 70 with sump. But that could be a bit more of a challange to set up if your just starting out. The AIO may be a easier option and still just as satisfying.

Why don’t you do a 90g so you have more hight. I personally love my 90g freshwater tank with a corner overflow and a eshoppz wet dry sump.

I believe AIO are easier for beginners to learn. It gives you time to experience the hobby and begin planning your own build with a sump. One of my easiest tanks was a 20g AIO. A 5gal WC every week and I never had an issue. Eventually outgrew the tank.

I got an AIO as my first tank. 6 months later im already planning to get a tank with a sump. The small area in the back of an AIO is such a pain. I wish i had not wasted my time and money on it. I would have been soo much happier with a sump. Now i need to spend more money and time to get to where I want to be when i could have just done it right from the beginning! Plus a sump hides all the equipment and makes for a much neater looking setup. Get the sump!
