Which Tunze for 4ft tank - 6065 or 6045?

Hi all,

Looking for an additional powerhead for my 4ft 55G FOWLR, I hear good things about Tunze in terms of quality and running noise so am looking at either a 6045 or 6065.

Would a 6065 be too much for a 4ft tank?

They are both non controllable unfortunately, I'm trying to save money where possible and the controllable ones are twice the price.

6065 is 6500lph and the other is 4500lph. on paper the 65 sounds like it may be too much but if I remember correctly Tunze powerheads have a fairly diffuse flow pattern so it may be okay

Using 2x Tunze 6065 in 4ft 90g and flow is strong enough to travel all the way across the length of the tank even being angled ~45 degrees up.

Is there enough force to mess with your sandbed once the flow has bounced off the opposite side of the tank? (if you have a sandbed that is).Thanks

It doesn’t blow the sand around but I noticed that the sand is higher in the middle of the tank.

I have to alternate them with timers bc it’s too much flow for the soft corals in the tank. It wouldn’t be a problem in a FOWLR though.

Two 6045's is plenty for a 55G Fowlr. The 6045 are also smaller that the 6065's

Buy 6025 and get more of them. that way you can mix up the flow. There are plenty of chances to buy 6055 on the cheap here in the used forum. I just bought a BNIB old style 6055 for 80 dollars.

In general I'd say the 6045 would be plenty AND is much smaller....tennis ball vs softball, roughly speaking.

I'm really glad you spoke up! I haven't seen these deployed before, and it's especially interesting to see them on a "short" tank like 4ft. Do you have any photos you could share?

Here are some rough approximations of the flow patterns for our Stream and Nanostream powerheads. The first number is the distance (length) it will reach. The second number is the diameter of the flow towards the end of the stream (keeping in mind the diameter increases the further from the pump you measure). All numbers are in feet.

I'm really glad you spoke up! I haven't seen these deployed before, and it's especially interesting to see them on a "short" tank like 4ft. Do you have any photos you could share?

I currently have a gyre XF250 running at 10% so technically I have the option for way more flow than I could ever need, however the tank is in an upstairs bedroom on a DIY wooden stand on a wooden floor and the vibration hum from this travels down through the floor so I was planning to try out the Tunze instead as they are supposed to be about as quiet as you can get. I also have a canister filter which outputs around 350lph. (used for mech filtration, carbon/rowa & testing out Xport NO3 cubes)

I also have 2 x XF250's on my 90 reef but this is downstairs on a concrete floor and a proper stand so vibration noise isn't an issue. I can't run a skimmer on the upstairs tank either for the same reason, have Tunze 9001 AC but its way to noisy. Looking at the flow patterns you posted i'm thinking 2 x 6045 might be the way to go.

Also can anyone tell me how small the squares on the output end of a 6045/65 when using the fish guard, would a small orchid dottyback fit through them?

I went with Tunze instead of the gyre due to complaints about gyre noise as this tank is in my living room. Tunze motors are dead silent, the only noise is from the water movement at the surface. Grates squares are pretty small I would estimate 1/4 inch. I was worried about harming livestock once I started alternating them but the only thing I notice are my small hermits taking flight every once and a while when they power on. I moved the pumps closer to the rock on purpose so my CUC can clean them for me as it’s annoying having to pull them out cord and all.

Haha well I can deal with a few pelagic hermit crabs so long as my dotty doesn't get minced! The gyres are definitely audible particularly above 40% or so but I don't find the noise from the 2 in my downstairs reef too distracting, for some reason I just can't quieten the one down in my fowlr.

Anyone used the 6150 Stream 3?

The few reports and vids I can find on them say they are silent. They are expensive but I may stretch to one if they are decent. Saving money for a 280g upgrade but seems like one of these would work well in the upgrade too.

I have 4 6045's in my standard 4 foot 120 gallon and they are adequate for the job. For a 55 gallon tank they are more then enough.

Thanks, yeah I have checked out a few threads and youtube vids but couldn't find much on long term usage, I guess as they are relatively new, what I have seen looks very promising though, very tempted as I saw one vid of someone using one in a 60l so it would definitely turn down low enough for use in a 55g and have enough kick to use on a 280g in the future

go to the tunze website and watch the video on flow vs turbulence. It compares the Tunze against the Vortex. the other thing you can see in the video is the difference in flow vs turbulence of the 2 tunze. the 65 has a good deal more flow and the 45 the turbulence. Basically the 45 will kick the water to the other end of the tank and bounce it off the far wall. The 65 moves a lot more water but it is spread out. I put the 45 in my 120 gal aqueon and it moves everything around nicely. Check it out and get what meets your need in the tank. Very quiet. if you set to cyclical operation, if the low speed setting is too low, you will hear the growl. Just speed it up a little and all is good.
