i am looking into buying a vortech mp10 or 40. I was wondering if a 40 could be turned down low enough for my LPS coral. I would rather want to buy 1 MP40, rather then 2 MP10, since I am looking to upgrade to 180g down the road.

A 180 takes at least three mp40's.....Unless your 180 is coming next week, I'm not sure your 40B makes a logical starting point for that.

In your current tank, two or even three mp10's would be a much better flow situation.

Thing is, even at a minimum (i.e. two pumps), you're spending about $500 to $700.

An alternative set of strategies...only 1.5 of which is in that spending category: ;)

3 x Turbelle® nanostream® 6045 ($78/ea) – $234/trio (or four) and a pair of simple timers can make a really nice tide simulation. You can start with only two.

..or..

2 x Turbelle® nanostream® 6055 ($185/ea) – $370/pr.

..or if you think wider-flow..

2 x Turbelle® nanostream® 6095 ($230/ea) – $460/pr.

..or..

2 or 3 x Turbelle® nanostream® 6040 ($140/ea) – $280/pr (or $420 for a trio)

You can dial down a 40 quite a bit but even dialed down that's a lot of pump for a 40B. I have one on my 70G and it's dialed down to keep everything on the LR.
