Optimally, the way I like to do it is with SeaChem Matrix sitting in an established tank (mine) for 1+ month then add it to a trash can with dry rock, pump and heater for a month. While that's going on I choose the tank, research current tech, make my choices and order. Usually takes a few weeks to get everything. Dump it all into the new tank after the plumbing is all done cycle the tank with bacteria. Cycle only takes like 5-7 days and tank is very stable at that point. Can usually add a few fish, some corals and a small cleanup crew without any worries.
My next project will be all Red Sea recommended options. I'm about 2-3 months out so I'm already tossed an extra media bag with Matrix into the filter system.
