Yes. They eat uneaten food an algae. That's whey therere there
A lot of extra food in the new tank stimulated the population to multiply. As the food supply wanes so will the population.
You'll see similar with snails and bristle worms.
If you always have clean glass because you are the worlds best reefer you won't be able to keep snails fed. Or if you have to many asterina starfish they can out compete the snails for food.

It's one more reason to keep a good clean up crew around. If by chance you got a bad flatworm and had no clean up crew there be lots of food and the flatworms population will explode.
I'd rather have bristle worms asterina and pods personally.
