Hi I have a new white cheek tang in my tank he seems okay he is already eating on his first day but he is really actively swimming super fast from each side of the tank and I am wondering if this is normal or if he's agitated ?

I have a 180 gallon with a lot of flow a maxspect 150 and a rw 15 here is my stock

Yellow tang
Silverspot tang
Kole tang
White cheek tang
Asfur angel
4 chroma
3 clowns
Six line wrasse
2 cardinals
Fire fish

Still loads of room so it's not like he's lacking space he's the biggest tang in the tang at about 5 inches

This is somewhat normal behavior but it does get worse if they have ich. If your tank has EVER had ich and left untreated (tank ran fallow and all fish treated prior to re-adding) then he has ich and 95% chance he will die of it.

These aren't like other tangs that sometimes can be kept in ich management tanks.

Also, from the low res video it looks like a powder brown tang, rather than a goldrim? Goldrim/white cheek are more fragile than their cousins the powder brown.

Powder Browns have an actual bar of white vs white cheek that have a smaller "spot". Powder Browns generally have a red line at the top, and white cheek/goldrim tangs are generally darker with less overall yellow on them and are more "handsomely" marked. Their shade is more similar to an Achilles tang, often. Not as determinant, a white cheek has a whiter tail. The tail generally has a yellow band toward the back, Powder brown tangs often have a darker tail but it can differ between specimens. The powder brown has a thicker yellow band towards the base of the tail.

A "true" powder brown tang is actually a white cheek/goldrim tang but let's not get in to that.

I am 90% sure you have a powder brown based on the large white spot I can clearly see.

Then your saying he should treat the whole tank for ich? Just in case?

only if he doesn't follow proper qt procedure.

Ummm really treat for ich even though it is not showing any symptoms, eating like a pig ? I am running uv by the way ? This tank has never had ich before ? And I think it looks more like the bottom picture and the shop says it's white cheek tang but I'm going to take a close up picture tmmorow for you after work

I don't follow proper qt procedures I've just been lucky with every fish I've had I do have all the stuff for a qt just never had to use it. Touch wood

Do you quarantine all your fish before putting in your tank?

Nope I never really understood the need if I've saw a fish in a tank at a local fish shop i trust for more than a few weeks and he's looking healthy isn't that good enough to believe it's fit and healthy ?

I just saw your reply. I know I will qt all my fish and corals before putting in tank. Better safe than sorry.
For fish qt ask you need is a basic aquarium kit. Walmart sells a 20 gallon kit for $75.
For my corals there is A JBJ frag tank combo that Dr. Foster and Smith has I will buy.
But for its a the kit they sell everywhere is fine or you can buy used equipment for cheaper. It is not wish risking all your fish to not quarantine.

I do have it all at hand just not set up right now as I haven't ever had a problem I was mainly just wondering if this fish is just a very active tang but if some people think it's signs of ich then I'll get ready to set it up wouldn't take more than a few hours

I hope it's ok, just looks hyper in the video. Just keep and eye on him. Look for increased breathing, scratching, more signs of stress. If he does, then act.

Thanks a lot I will keep an eye on him and certainly will take fast action if needs be :)

Did you quarantine and treat this fish? If not, 99/100 your tank now has ich as he does too. These guys are magnets for it. I hope I am wrong but I know what I am talking about in this regard.

Nope I did not quarantine it I haven't quarantined any of my tangs and not had a problem I've always seemed to get away with it, what steps should I take then just keep an eye on it over the next few days shouldn't my uv sterilizer take care of ich in free floating form ?

That may work with other fish but it will not with Acanthurus tangs, especially powder Browns, goldrim, powder blue, and Achilles.

Many lfs run copper or hypo to keep fish from showing symptoms.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but with what you have told me, I predict with 90% certainty that he will be dead in a month. Sorry, but what you see as "luck" is actually just your fish building resistances to ich. It's called ich management. I did it for YEARS. It is nearly impossible to pull off with Acanthurus tangs. I probably killed 20 over 12 years trying to keep them the same way I kept my other tangs, failed always. A fish should live 10 years in captivity. My biggest "success" was an Achilles tang that lasted a year, and a PBT that made it 6 months until I sold it but the tank had trace elements of copper... He didn't make it at the home I sent him to, eventually succombing to ich.

I have 14 tangs now, 7 of which are Acanthurus tangs. My success rate changed from .05% to 90%+ with proper treatment.

I hope I'm not coming off mean in any way, I am trying to walk a fine line between telling you the truth so that you don't end up doing what I did to these fish for years, and ticking you off. I am erring on the side of protecting the lives of the fish though lol.

UV are ineffective at best. Lots of good information on here about how and why.

Like I said, your fish are just building resistances. Read the thread I posted:
