Hi
I am knew to this site and the world of tropical marine.
I started my new tank a week ago. 270litres with a 30 litre sump, skimmer and bio pellet reactor both located within the sump. Within 2days the tank water displayed a whitish cloud to the water. Day 6 it is totally fogged out cannot even see inside. Also it is starting to lay a white film on everything (that i am able to see). I did a water test amonia nitrite and nitrates are zero. The water is RO saltwater. no livestock in tank. Have about 30kg of live rock.
1. Will this damage my live rock and live sand
2. What is the best way to get the water crystal clear
3. What do I need to do to prevent this reoccurring.
4. How do i clean up all the rock of all the white slime that is deposited onto surfaces.

Runs a larger amount of new carbon.
Use a mag float to wipe off the glass.
Use a turkey baster to blow off the rocks.
Use floss or foam for mechanical filtration.
Leave the lights off for a couple days.
If it does not clear in 4-5 days do a water change.

Hi

Thank you for your advice.

I have placed a large bag of activated carbon under the overflow pipe in the sump.
Have cleaned the glass with mag float and a scour pad.
Blasted the rock with the baster......such common sense genius!!
I only have a skimmer and bio pellet reactor so no position for me to to place floss or foam in the filter system.

I will place some before and after photos as already after six hours changes are happening.

Also done my salinity 1.020 which I understand is a nit low.
Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate all zero.

I am feeling much happier for having been able to do something.

Cheers

You're welcome. :-)

Before and after within two days .

Still some bits on the rocks but will clear those up in time.

Thanks also for the link on setting up a reef aquarium, really informative.

I must admit my local shop have been amazing so calm, confident and professional. But do not want to bug them too much as they are also very busy.

So this forum has been a great find.

Now hold tight for my panic as the algae phases kick in and the nitrogen cycle finally starts......
