White coral!! not common?

I got a new coral today..a Lapthastrea
It's white and other colors too. but how often do you see a white coral???? (Thats still alive )

actually through the glass it's pale white and orangey polyps this is definitively a top down coral

I would love to be wrong on this- as your excitement is Awesome, yet
I will say that the coloration is Probably due to a low content of zoozanthallae and once the
coral regains that balance- it is likely to regain its original coloration....

(which may be a very light baby blue)

well if the guy was selling 4 frags of this that are cut/healed/and grown out/ and they all look exactly the same. I'm guessing they are not fadded or have a lack of Zooanthallae ..
I could be wrong And I hope...

Nope I think it could very well be the color it is.....even if it was a light baby blue/white it is still enough color for it to have the zooxanthellae create an energy source for the coral......I think it is amazing man, keep us updated on it so we can continue to be amazed.

Knowledge is Power!

Appears to be a Hawaiian Lepthastrea purpurea-
and due to the nature of geographical location of this coral in nature and it's reef location having an Abundant food source- this coral most likely feeds more by mouth that by the glucose byproduct of zoozanthallae...

So- in light of this new information---- This Coral Is Most Likely Colored up----- Yeah!!!

That coral gets like that in high light. I have the same one. It will color in as soon as it gets settled in. Again, I have the same thing and if I put it in high light this is how it looks.

It gets like that when I frag it too as the polyps retract and more light gets in between the polyps turning the base white again. Its not dead or unhealthy it just gets like that but it does go away when the polyps come way out for a lengthy time like it will when it settles in. It has strong flourecent properties and looks awesome under actintics.

Here's an old pic of mine when it was coloring up, you can still see some white in between the polyps and if I were to touch them so they retract you would see more, I have a pic of some frags where its way more obvious but I have to find it. I am not hating, just trying to point it out.

It will remain that color for you. Cherry Corals used to bring in this morph and it holds... it's a wicked piece.

Got ya, I should have also said that it can stay that way and keep that color, and be healthy. What I should have said is that under certain lighting it can lose the white and change colors. However, if you like the white then you can find the sweet spot in the tank that will allow it to keep those colors. I like mine a little better when it had the gold/orange and purple colors instead, but thats just me. It is in no way hurting or lacking zooanthalea. I just wanted to share that in my experience with this type of coral, I have seen it lose the white, but It is possible to keep that color in certain conditions. I would not have posted if I didn't have experience with it to share. I am sorry if it seemed like I was trying to discredit you in any way. That was not my intention.

I like it, and it sounds like you can get it to remain white like that without jeopardizing its health. Good find -- I've certainly not seen anything like it around where I live. It's hard enough to find the more normal varieties of Leptastrea in my area.
