Over the last couple of days I have noticed what looks like white dust floating around the tank. Its a 25 gal with hob reef octopus classic bh-100. I thought it was micro bubbles being given off by the skimmer until I saw some different plastic surfaces that are in the tank i.e. plastic around skimmer pump assembly. The is still within its first month. The cycle only took a week and then two baby clowns were added. Feeding occurs every other day. There is still diatoms in the tank from the initial bloom. Could this be a bacteria? an algae?

Most likely calcium precipitate, do you know your Cal, Alk and Mg numbers?

No. My lfs told me if I will do a 5 gal water change every week then I shouldn't have to dose or worry about those.

For what it’s worth I wouldn’t listen to anything your LFS is telling you.. you don’t necessarily need to test all the time but it’s important to be able to test your parameters for just such an occasion or other emergencies.. high Alk or low Mg can both cause calcium precipitation. If it’s a new system give it some time to settle and stabilize it may go away.

Thanks for the heads up! Ill order tests right now. Which do you prefer?
