I have ZERO algae in my tank EXCEPT on the white egg crate frag rack i made. Any frags I put on this rack gets the same algae. And i'm talking some nasty algae. Every so often I take the frags off, take the rack out of the tank and soak it in muric acid to make it pretty again. Then within less than a day I see algae growing again and within a week it's covered. Does anyone else experience this? I have heard phosphates leach out of it? Is that true? Is it only some specific makers of white egg crate or all of them? Anyone with black egg crate have the same problem? I have tried blasting it with a power head to get extra flow around it and it makes no difference.

I did a few tests.

-I cleaned the egg crate and soaked it in peroxide for 3 days, its still soaking actually. Im hoping this will pull some phosphates out. Will report back.

- i made a new rack and put it on the sand bed, its been in the tank for 3 days and there is zero algae on it. Usually algae forms within hours, literally. So its safe to say that light plays a big role in this. The original rack that is soaking was placed mid way up from the bottom.

What did you find? Anything different?

I have same issue as well. I think there are more nutrients at top of water and the rack is closer to light. I think that is some contributing things.

I ended up soaking the egg crate in the hydrogen peroxide for a week and it solved the problem. To this day, no algae.

Oh wow. Thanks for the tip. I will give a try. Maybe not as long though.

There are some post somewhere that white eggcrate releases phosphate
