I was fixing the rock in my tank when I found a white rubbery mass growing on the under side of a rock. Any one know what it could be?

Cool. If it is do I need to put the rock with the mass facing down or facing up?

Its up to you it won't matter. If you want to play around with it and watch it grow you could get some zeovit sponge power it makes sponges grow a lot faster as it is food for them I use it. I have a piece like yours with yellow sponge on it.

Now do sponges need light? Because I heard they are good for dark refugiums

I think they do but I have seen them grow on the bottom of rocks with no light but it may that each sponge is different when it comes to how much light they need.

That particular sponge doesn't require much. They're great for filtration.

low ligt on that particular sponge works best. Not likely that urchins will harm it.

Thanks cyndi. I moved the rock with the sponge to the refugium I just setup under the tank for right now.
