I just got a 55 gallon saltwater tank (with fish, sump, etc) from my neighbor. All in all, things look good, but there is a lot of growth on the back wall. Most of it is either greenish or reddish, but there is a white splotch in the middle that looks odd. Any idea what this is, if it should be of concern, and what to do about it?

Thanks,
Ryan

Welcome to R2R Ryan. That looks like dead coraline algae to me. Not sure why it would only be in that one spot. Can you give us some specifics about the tank? How long since it was moved? Do you know the parameters? Livestock?

Hi Ryan, Welcome to R2R! Like mentioned above I think it's dead algae as well. If you know the water parameters, like the PH and such, that might be helpful. Unless it spreads I don't think it's a whole lot to worry about though. Back of tanks get ugly - it's just part of the hobby unless you have a way to clean it off. My tank is next to the wall so I just leave the algae on the back of the tank personally.

Welcome! I would say just scrape that area off and allow the coralline to fill back in. Another possible way to hide it would be a magnetic frag mount that looks like a rock.

Just my .02 but I don’t think that it is problematic.

Sure! It's 55 gallons. It was moved Wed (11/27, 3 days ago). There are 7 fish and a few nassarius snails. The salinity was a bit low (1.020) so I am working to bring that up slowly through water changes. pH - 8.3, Ammonia - 0.25 ppm, Nitrite - 0 ppm, Nitrate - 40 ppm, Temp. - 76F

Love the frag mount idea! Thanks
