White spots on toadstool leather

Hey everyone I have two leathers that are located on the same rock. One smaller than the other. Both open and in good flow. While closed last night we noticed some large white patches particularly on the smaller one. Water parameters are good. Would love some advice on what’s going on. Is this the start of a shed?

Mine have always shed from the top, never on the stalk. I'm not sure, but to me this looks like scarring from something nipping on it.

My devils hand shed stalk as well but that doesn’t look to be a shed

And the low nitrate levels won’t have anything to do with it ? Only fish I have that even goes close to it is my fairy wrasse. Or can it be parasites of some sort? I will keep an eye on it and see if anything is nipping. Will Iodine dip help it recover once I figure out what’s wrong?

I would raise nitrate and phosphate levels. What are you doing to.control those

Only things that really go near or on it are snails from my cuc. That wouldn’t be the cause would it?

Currently upd my feedings and that’s really it. No water changes. Except to siphon some algae/Dino’s but I’m reusing my water. I was debating on using some reef chili or roids. To help the corals.

For what it worth my devil's hand did that on a couple of the fingers. I ended up cutting them off and it made a full recovery. My issue was low flow and the shed did not come off causing the white spots.

Nope. Just some Cerith nassaruis and trochus from reef cleaners

Hmmm the one that is displaying the most white is the smaller one that’s sandwiched. I need to move him. Never done that before. He’s attached very well.

It would be tough to do.

Run carbon. If you can pull the rock make a quick cut along the base with a new sharp blade. I always dip after fragging and rinse in a seperate container. Than take a toothpick and push through coral and gently tie the toothpick to the frag.

My last attempt to put base in the sand and letting the sand attach to the cut and super glue it to the frag was a 40 percent rate. Out of five frags two stuck three did not.

Okay thank you so much. I stopped my reactors when I realized the nitrate being that low was going to be an issue. I will run carbon only. And I know I have to remove that leather. I was just so scared to kill it. I will cut it very low to the base and do exactly what you said. And as for the white spots. I’ll monitor them and try and get my nitrates up somehow. Maybe even neonitro?

I was the same way you where. The first time I had to cut mine. They are Hardy and will do just fine.

Thank you for the pictures. Makes me feel better. I’ll have to post my results. And I guess I’ll cut another rock just big enough to hold it. Definitely won’t fit on a plug.

Leathers reproduce a number of ways, lateral fission is one method. Basically they rip apart slowly. You may be seeing the beginnings. If all other corals are well I wouldn't make any changes.
There is a Nudi that eats Leathers, the nudi leaves a trail of what looks like saw dust if present.
