Later in that thread the OP posted a pic of a sponge that was growing on a coral. But, it appeared to be some type of a ball sponge and not a pineapple sponge. I think pineapple sponges are too small to smother anything and as far as I've seen, don't grow in dense groups.I found this article:

Guys, earlier today I discovered pineapple sponge that was bothering my zoa. Removed that one, then later researched and found out that many people say its actually very good for the tank and arguably more rare than any zoa. Well, I just found another one, about the size of a nickel on the back...www.reef2reef.com

They're pretty easy to remove. I had some on the back part of a powerhead so I just plucked them off with my hand because they were kinda ugly against a black background.The ones in my tank are growing really fast and there's a lot as well.
