I had an explosion of these a year ago or so. I read they use silicates in the water and so do diatoms. I'd prefer these over diatoms any day

I’m reading about that right now. They are all over my sump mainly in my last baffle before my return chamber. I still have diatoms on one side of my main display tank but controlled. I think it’s cuz of these sponges keeping them in check.

+1 pineapple sponges, a good thing. They will was and wane in your tank as nutrient levels fluctuate, but I would never consider seeing them a "bad thing" :) congrats on the new life!

Other than being rather ugly, I wouldn't consider diatoms bad either! In fact they are a good sign that your tank is well on its way through maturing.
