Hello! I'm new to this and I've just begun cycling my tank. I noticed these today; they appear to be like facial hair consitency, and don't retract when touched. Also don't seem to have any sort of texture. I did some googling and some searching on this site and when I find something that seems relatively similar to this, other characteristics tell me it isn't that. And I dont see a tube or anything but its all in this one spot. Also this 'live rock' is just seeded dry rock that is seeded from other dry rock from the lfs for bacteria and coralline purposes. Sorry the picture sucks, the way the rock is placed this was the only direction I could take a picture without removing it from the tank. TIA and look forward to learning a lot!

No clue, but welcome fellow San Diegan!
Hey man! Hows if goin? Hey question, do you or know anyone who uses water from our many beaches for tank water? We all know the bay can be kinda gross but even mb or lj should be clean. Any benefits or downsides?

i believe that is a sign of vermetid snails will be hiding somewhere and most likely small
If this is the case, it/they should starve during cycling, right? No food is currently going in there.

I don't know anyone who uses San Diego ocean beach water on their reef tanks. Maybe you should and report back on the outcome? I do know a lot of people who use Scripps aquarium water, which is pumped from a depth off La Jolla. They have a spigot where you can take water for free.

some info here: http://www.sdreefs.com/forums/showthread.php?136886-Scripts-water

Personally I would suggest using ro/di and a good salt mix :)

Hey man I found these on my powerhead. Vermetid snails or something else? Should I start the tank over or should I keep cycling and kill them as I go to just starve em out?

Grab a need and prick them at the base or glue their holes shut, no need to start again

My research has shown me that tovstarve them you need to not feed for a month at minimum

Gotcha. Well I just removed my powerhead and knocked everything off and cleaned it. Those were the only ones I could visibly see. They are very tiny though.

those look like spirorbid worms on the powerhead, not like vermited snails to me, spirorbids arent bad

I’ve always read ..
consider beaches as the skimmer of the ocean .
all nasty stuff is washed up on the beaches .
There used to be a post , can’t remember if it was here or another forum years ago .
there was a distance from shore where to get clean water

@Randy Holmes-Farley

do you have a answer for water quality comparing beaches to so many miles out ?

Now that I look it up, they do. I also found this while searching around. Egg sack???
