Who all uses lids on their Reef?

In 30+ years I've never even thought of a fish fracturing its spine when running into a glass top , they do also run into the sides of the tank and never seen them break a spine. Has anyone actually ever had a fish that slammed into the top or side of there tank and actually broke there spine? Not stirring things up just wondering if it's really ever happened and is it physically possible in a tank and how you would know aside from an X-ray machine?;Nurse

I didn’t see those posts, but I assume this is screen window frame, that is what I use on my 110. Then just get the rubber spline, and corners there too, then mesh screen from BRS.

We lost Blenny Hill, one of our favorite fish when he took a leap. Then I lost various fish right through egg crate and mesh. Now we use glass and have for years. Of course our sump is in the basement, so gas exchange isn't an issue. Just keep it clean and it is fine.

I use egg-crate from home depot. Sold in the lighting department. Stops jumpers i clean it of salt whenever i notice a build up with a hose. Cut outs made with snips.

Although I need to clean them regularly, I have always used glass covers as I have larger tanks and enjoy the benefits of: Low evaporation, No splash, light penetration and prevention of jumpers.
Been using glass for over 30 years. Ever notice stores all use glass??? There's a reason.

DIY screen tops on all my saltwater tanks, including rimless. Any fish could jump at any time, so I personally feel that anyone without a top of some type is irresponsible

I made diy lids for my dt and qts. I'm having a custom tank built and the builder contacted artfully acrylic to do the custom lid. I've also heard great things about octo lids

I do the Lowes screen frame kit $11.98 and the Marine Depot mesh $6.99. The frames come in white or brown, I spray paint them black. I got a quote from Octo Lids a while back and will probably go that route eventually. Would like to try a DIY with some polycarbonate, 1/4" mesh and a router some day.

I had a Blueline or Maze Angel jump on me so I definitely keep tank covered now. was a big bummer and an expensive lesson. Replaced him and everybody is happy to be covered.

I’ve always wondered; do the fish realize there’s a cover? Or do they jump anyway, and just smack into the lid, keepers nonethewiser?

I use egg crate from lowes/home depot...so easy to just clip and customize it for overflow etc.

There are problems with using egg crate. It does block some light and fish can fit through. If the head fits the whole fish will.
