So maybe this is just a late night thought but, who are you trying to please with your tank?

I've noticed that when I invite friends over and they see the tank, which is in my room for reference. People seem to be fascinated by completely different things about the tank than me. Something that I would consider cheap and maybe a nuisance, they might view as awesome and entertaining to watch. For example my ex-girlfriend used to love to watch the pulsing Xenia (I used to have plentiful amounts) Where as most of us reefers with a "trained eye" see Xenia as a cheap and usually nuisance coral. Where as we tend to see chalices and rare zoanthid morphs as the stars of our tanks, it seems that these are overlooked by people who aren't in the hobby, and usually they are pretty overwhelmed by the amount of money we shell out for these pieces.

So my question is, is your tank more for your own personal viewing pleasure? Or to impress friends and family ext. And what have you noticed other people like more in your tank, fish, corals and so forth compared to yourself?

Definitely personal.

Things people like:
Any euphyllias, preferably the bright green kind. And then they trip when you tell them it's not an anemone.
Nemo
Anemone
Green Toadstools
Xenia
Green Star Polyps

I have to say its pretty personal too. If I had a dollar for every time I've been told to get dory from nemo..... I'd have a nice rainbow chalice lol. But I think if my tank were in my livingroom for example, I would be getting larger colonies of cheaper corals for instance, just to have something for everyone to look at. Since people don't seem to notice the beauty in frags lol.

I think making a tank to please others would be 100000000000000000000000x cheaper than trying to make a tank to please myself. Biocube with frogspawn, GSP, pulsing xenia and nemo. Vwoila! All under a blue LED. :)

Me: I don't even know where to start. LOL.

definately for me.....but everyone loves when the blues are on ....its nick name is skittles....all the zoas light up

The blues make a perfect night light for when "guests" are over I have noticed... Personally I love being able to lay in bed and watch the tank.

All blue channels on my Kessil ftw. Nothing like sitting back and just watching your tank glow huh? It's the simple things that make this hobby so enjoyable and worth the effort and money. It's living art you made yourself. :)

Mostly me, but I try to at least let my family pick a thing apiece that they like. Theh they feel included, and start to love it too. ♡

It's all about me and mostly always has been, kind of OCD about having my Reeftank be as natural as possible ie; natural looking aquascape with sand substrate, NO FRAG PLUGS, natural lighting temp (14-15K) mostly hardy/more common corals but mature large colonies, diverse population of Fish and Invertebrates. People visiting friends/family seem to enjoy anything colorful and/or with movement. It's fun to see them react to discovering all the little things first overlooked like the hermits, Nasarius snails, cucumber, cowries or even my Gobies............... and the almost certain question........... "Absolutely Beautiful but, how easy/hard is this tank to care for ???"

Cheers, Todd

I build my tank to please myself. I try to include my wife and let her pick some coral and fish, but for the most part it's all about me. Folks that come over are point out different things they like and it's usually what's most colorful. My cheap toad stool leather gets the most attention it seems. It is beautiful to watch swaying back and forth (wavebox) so I can't blame them.

My tank is all about me and what I like. All my friends and family enjoy seeing my tank and love the diversity of it. I love answering the question "ohh, what's that".

my tank is to please anybody cuz as for right now I'm not happy with how it look or set up but other seem to love simple things therefore save me more money till i get my own place and set up the way i want to set up :pound:

My tank is for me. It's a little world I created and I love to take care of it and watch things grow. My friends think coral is really cool and love it when I post new pics on Facebook!

This is a funny topic. I remember about 5 years ago when I had roughly $5,000 of coral frags in one small section of my tank. My family comes over for Thanksgiving and they were completely blown away by a few pieces of Aiptasia that I was trying to get rid of.

I love it when people come over and are going, "Ooh, what's that?" XD

It's amazing how many times I've gotten the question, "What's a coral?" Seriously, these people have no idea. >.< I must educate them!
